    Week 17 Teaser

    1 - Lieutenant Martinez’s Office - Monday, 9:20 a.m.

Detective Cunningham, I don’t know how much Sayers told you, but we have a bit of a situation at the moment.

UFOs falling out of the sky with dead bodies in them? Trevor responded. I’d say you have more than a bit.

Do you know why you’re here? Martinez asked.

Not really. Taking in the lieutenant’s office - clutter an even mix of things the man had accomplished over his long, illustrious career and things he had left to do before he could retire - Trevor was far more blasé than the situation warranted. Of course, Beck couldn’t entirely blame him when he didn’t know what was going on. Sayers just said Homicide needed a hand, and I was the chosen one. I knew you couldn’t resist me forever.

Detective Nash requested you, Martinez stated in response.

    Is that right?

Beck could feel Trevor look her way, but she knew better than to look back. She knew he would be wearing that arrogant-as-fuck expression she hated ninety-eight percent of the time, and, since they were not currently fucking on the floor of Martinez’s office, this would be one of those times it would make her want to elbow him right in the face.

    You sound surprised, Martinez said.

    I am, Trevor admitted.

Really? Detective Nash led me to believe the two of you work well together.

We do. Fingers sliding onto her shoulder, Beck fought the urge to flick Trevor off as he gave it a squeeze. Beck just forgets that a lot of the time.

Well, right now she needs a partner she knows well. Someone who can slip right into the space we need filled and get the job done, Martinez said.

That’s me. Apparently realizing messing with her was no way to secure the position, Trevor pulled his attention from Beck to look back to Martinez.

I have to be straight with you, though, Martinez warned. Whoever takes this on is stepping into an already dangerous situation.

    Doesn’t bother me, Trevor uttered.

We’re not talking day-to-day danger here. There is a real threat. You could be targeted just due to your association with Nash, Martinez qualified, and Trevor softly snorted.

Makin’ friends all over the place, huh?

This is not a joke, Detective, Lieutenant Martinez declared, and Beck took some satisfaction in watching the smirk fall from Trevor’s face. Nash says you have no family in town. That’s good. But she said you do have someone.

Not anymore, Trevor surprised Beck by saying.

You sure about that? Martinez asked.

Since she tossed all my shit at me from a second story window, calling me a ‘dick’ the entire time in Spanish, yeah, I’m pretty sure that ship has sailed.

Okay. Good, Martinez said. For us, I mean. Obviously, not for you. So, you’re okay with this then?

Yeah. Trevor was quick to take on the risk. As Beck knew he would be. Just tell me what it is I’m doing.

The team will fill you in. Martinez stood behind his desk, hand extending across it. Welcome to Metro Homicide. Temporarily.

Glancing to Beck, Martinez chucked his head in the direction of the door, and it was clear that was all the adjustment period they were going to get. Martinez wanted her to pick someone who could slip right into the role for a reason. They had a lot to do if they were going to figure out where in the city their killer’s next victim might crash land, and precious little time to do it.

You know, if you wanted Brandy out of the picture, all you had to do was ask.

They were halfway across the bullpen when Beck heard the quiet utterance.

Don’t be an asshole, she returned.

Hey. Trevor grabbing her arm, Beck whirled on him, intensely aware of the number of witnesses in the room as he took a step closer. You asked for me.

Because you are a good cop. And a good partner. That is what I want from you, Trevor. Beck made the facts very clear. Just do your job, and try not to get killed. We don’t have to be best friends.

Moving, once more, in the direction they’d been headed, Beck led Trevor through the
