He’s disgusting! Emiliana Hernandez declared with quiet vehemence to her parents. How could you even think that I would marry him? The force of the statement caused Marta and Jorge Hernandez to pull back in shock. She rarely raised her voice, and never to them.

Watch your tone, young lady, her father reprimanded sternly after he recovered. We are still your parents.

Her mother’s eyes moistened with unshed tears. He may be your only... She stopped before completing the sentence and bit her lower lip.

My only chance at love? Marriage? I would rather spend all of my life alone than with the likes of Rodrigo Gonzalez. You don’t know him the way I do. She tossed her head in disgust, causing her long black hair to ripple and shine. The dark tresses cascaded down her back in a silky wave when they weren’t being tied back or coiled into a modest knot.

Emiliana, or Emily as most friends and family members knew her, shuddered as she recalled the way that Rodrigo Sanchez had tried to get close to her. Rank, unwashed body odor and garlic seemed to emanate from every pore. She had nearly vomited.

Well, you have to be realistic, her father stated, not unkindly. There haven’t been a lot of boys who have wanted to date you.

A lot? None, Emily corrected. I know that I spoke to you harshly, and for that I’m sorry, but you must know that I could never love such a man. Her normal, patient tone of voice had returned. She was reasonable and calm again. I suspect he only wants to marry me to get his filthy hands on the family business.

The Hernandez family owned a fine restaurant deep in the heart of Manhattan. It was a lucrative business and although they had a large family, no one wanted for anything. Emily enjoyed being in the restaurant and sampling all the exotic dishes that were served there. Her size was a reflection of that. It was the bane of her existence, but she couldn’t resist partaking of the tantalizing foods. The spicy dishes of her parents’ homeland appealed to her taste buds more than a svelte figure.

Well, now. I don’t know about that, her father rejoined with a frown. But I suppose it could be true. Although you are the apple of my eye, boys these days are too superficial to look beyond outward appearance. When you find one who will, you’d better snap him up.

Jorge, her mother chided gently. No need to be so harsh. She had recovered herself, but still looked downcast at her daughter’s reaction to the news that Rodrigo wanted to marry her. Maybe if you spend a little more time with him, you might see his good qualities, she coaxed. We just want you to be happy.

I know, and I’m grateful to have parents who care so much, but this will not make me happy. Please, she begged, can we change the topic?

This is not the last time we will discuss it, Jorge proclaimed. Rodrigo Sanchez comes from a good family and we will not let you shame us this way. At the very least, you can go out with him a few times before you refuse him completely.

The obedient daughter returned. Yes, Papa, she conceded, but then her stubborn side flared up. I will go out with him one time, and then I hope you will respect my decision.

Three times, her father argued.

Two, and I will do my very best to be pleasant and charming, she countered.

The two of them regarded each other for a moment. Emily’s eyes snapped. In spite of her usual gentle demeanor, her hot-tempered ancestry shone out of her dark orbs. Fine, her father agreed stoically, his own eyes a reflection of hers. But see that you are. No man likes to be with a strong-willed woman. You would do better to follow your mother’s example.

Emily quickly turned a laugh into a cough and glanced over to see her mother giving her a warning look. She brought her hands up to cover the smirk that stole over her face, a face so like her mother’s with its olive complexion and fine features. She was truly a blend of both parents, but her size she’d inherited from her paternal grandmother, who’d also been a full-sized woman.

Although her father felt quite certain that he’d married a submissive, docile, gentle creature, it was a façade. Marta knew how to speak in order to get her husband to see things her way. It wasn’t exactly manipulative, but it wasn’t passive either.

Yes, Papa, she replied. I will.

"Bien. He replied in their native Spanish tongue. Now, go and see about the dinner shift."

With the matter settled, at least in her father’s mind, Emily was free to go back to the restaurant. After deftly tying her hair up in her standard no-nonsense bun, she crossed the courtyard that separated their large dwelling from their business. There she was welcomed warmly by the staff. Not only was she tremendously organized and personable, but she also encouraged the employees when they faltered, whereas her father generally would reprimand, sometimes harshly. They much preferred her management to her father’s and were very glad when she appeared instead of him.

What’s on the menu for the special tonight, Juan? Juan Ramirez was a fantastic chef they had acquired from a competing restaurant. He had been enticed from his former position with promises of time off and regular raises. He was entirely happy with his decision to come to their restaurant, "La Cocina, the Spanish word for kitchen".

"Tonight, I am making the Punta de Solomillo," he answered in very careful English. Although the Hernandez family was proud of their culture, they encouraged their employees to speak English in order to better acclimate themselves to the American
