    Present Day...

    It was like the storm came out of nowhere. The warm and somewhat sunny day had been pleasant, so Scarlet thought the night would be like any other. Unfortunately, her presumption couldn’t be further from the truth.

    There was no light rain before the storm to foretell of the approaching disaster. It started with heavy drops of rain which could easily be seen and heard, and thus mistaken for hail. Then the lightning and thunder began.

    Scarlet had been sitting in the living-room, swaying ever so gently in a wicker-chair. She was reading a book. That’s what Scarlet usually did when Harv was out hunting for the magical mushrooms.

    Scarlet closed the windows before the water could get inside. She then went to comfort Blackie because her dear cat always hated thunderstorms. Scarlet’s heart ached when she remembered that Blackie was no longer with them.

    Just like everything else, habits die hard, Scarlet thought, slightly bitter. That’s why Harv does this. There would only be pain if we were to lose one another.

    It hardly seemed possible, but the storm got worse. What-if scenarios plagued Scarlet’s mind. What if Harv got lost? What if someone has hurt him? No, Scarlet’s rationality replied. Harv knows these woods and he’s stronger than any man I’ve ever known.

    The minutes passed tensely as the storm raged on. Walking back and forth and constantly pulling the curtains aside to look out the window only increased Scarlet’s anxiety. She took one last look out the window to see nothing but wet trees shaking in the harsh wind.

    Harv, come back to me, Scarlet silently begged as she ran to the only place that could give her comfort during Harv’s absence.

    In the bedroom she shared with Harv, Scarlet cast the single sheet aside and then climbed into bed. When she used to live in the city, she would always make her bed. There would be a sheet, blanket and quilt. Scarlet always did this, even in summer. Now that Scarlet lived with Harv, things were
