Bru Baker

Traditions from the Heart

The week before Christmas

AARON, honestly. Don’t be such a baby.

His sister Madison shouldered past him, head held high, and entered the store in front of them, leaving Aaron and his best friend Garrett staring after her. She didn’t seem the slightest bit embarrassed as she perused the offerings on the shelves, which were plainly visible from the street through the plate-glass window.

Aaron had known bringing her along had been a bad idea. It wasn’t as if he needed help picking out a Christmas gift for his boyfriend, after all. It was just that Madison was always teasing him about how awful his gifts were, and this was his first Christmas with Ben. He wanted his gift to be perfect.

When Madison picked up something hideously furry in camouflage, of all things, and held it up, smirking as she waved it at them through the window, Aaron was tempted to just leave. They’d taken the train, after all, so he’d hardly be stranding Madison there.

Garrett grabbed his arm as he started to move away, his thickly knitted fingerless gloves standing out starkly against Aaron’s camel-hair coat. Garrett always dressed like a starving college student, despite the fact that he was an up-and-coming star in the same law firm in which Aaron was rising through the ranks. It looked like Garrett’s resolve was wavering, too, his gaze flicking back and forth between the store and Aaron, but ever the good friend, he tried to be supportive.

"Aaron, man. Come on. You can do it. This will be epic," Garrett said, lips cherry red from the cold and curved into a smile so infectious that it was impossible for Aaron not to join in.

Aaron cast another wary glance toward the store, a bit worried now that he
