About this ebook
If you love historical homes, powerful political figures, steamships, trains, brilliant business people, renovations, interior design, gardens in pink and secrets, then welcome to Glencairn Hall. Built in 1832, perched on the edge of the Niagara River. The road this mansion is situated on, according to Winston Churchill, “is the prettiest drive in the world.”

Author’s Note
Someone has to tell this story, and that someone is me! Each chapter offers the reader a story with a unique connection to our past. This book is entitled A Grandfather’s Gift. The Honourable Robert Hamilton, as he expressed in his will, wanted a home built for his grandson Robert Jarvis Hamilton. The grandson who would carry the name Robert. He was a very proud grandfather. I was very surprised when I realized the grand house, was built as Robert Senior was in his final resting place, he had been dead, for twenty three years. Glencairn Hall exists now because of Robert senior’s wish.
So this story is about A GRANDFATHER’S GIFT
I have researched the history of some of the most prominent owners of the Grand Old Lady during the years when Canada was being built. I have also discovered in the later years and learned about the vibrant visions of other owners.
It is a privilege for me to share this engaging tale of history and life behind the walls of Glencairn for the last 183 years with you, the reader.

The historical information and photographs presented in this book are as accurate as the accounts presented in the library books, websites, and newspaper clippings that I diligently read and researched.
I thank my husband Reg who encouraged me to tell my story of this special place and the fascinating people who passed through the doors of Glencairn Hall.
Dedication
This book is dedicated to our son, Michael James, who passed away on February 10th, 1996. Like his parents, Michael enjoyed renovating old buildings. He found The Morrow Building, a landmark in Peterborough, Ontario. His vision was to bring back this piece of history. R. F. Porter Plastering Ltd accomplished this in Michael’s memory by 1999.

This book is dedicated to our daughter Robin Lynn, who has completely designed and renovated a 105-year-old cottage on the Lake of Bays in Muskoka, Ontario.
