Zürich: Photo Travel Guide
Preface
Zürich is an important economic and cultural centre, and home to 400,000 people. The largest city in Switzerland has an attractive position alongside the north of Lake Zürich, and on both shores of the River Limmat that flows out of the lake in a north-westerly direction. This is a student city, with both Zürich University, the biggest in Switzerland, and ETH, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.
This photo guide shows the most important sights of the city, along with some of its festivals. Each picture is accompanied by a short commentary, including how to get to the location.
Information about accommodation can be found at the main city Tourist Office, which is in the big hall of Zürich’s Railway Station.
All pictures in this guide were taken by the author.
Please note: for this English language edition of Zürich, Photo Travel Guide I have used the English for German words like quai (quay), münster (minster or cathedral) and brücke (bridge) where possible to make it easier for the reader; the German place names will be found in the City Plan.
Zürich’s churches
The view of the city from from Quaibrücke (Quay Bridge): on the left bank is Bauschänzli square and public park. This was once part of the city’s defensive wall; now it houses a restaurant and beer garden. Beyond, the church nearer the camera is the Fraumünster (‘Women’s Cathedral‘); its blue-green slender spire is one of the main landmarks of the city. Behind it, with a slightly shorter spire, is the tower of St
