      1. Introduction

      About Islam

      Islam is a complex belief system and this guide can only serve as a brief introduction to it. However, it should provide enough information to educate the reader about a topic that they may be quite unfamiliar with. In this work, we will attempt to demystify Islamic belief, for westerners.

      Islam is one of the world’s major religions, with over one billion followers around the world. Founded by the prophet Muhammad in the seventh century, it is a monotheistic faith. More importantly, Muslims see their religion as part of a continuing divine revelation.

      Most Islamic scholars trace the origins of their beliefs from the prophetic line of Abraham. Many westerners would be surprised to learn that Islam teaches that both Judaism and Christianity are true religions, but considers itself as the final evolution of God’s plan. Muslims also consider Jesus and Moses as great prophets of the one true God.

      Older texts sometimes refer to Islam as Muhammadism. However, this is not an acceptable term for modern Muslims. It’s important to understand that the religion clearly teaches that its adherents are the followers of the one true God, and not followers of Muhammad.

      Muhammad is revered as a great prophet, but the ultimate authority is the divine. The Qur’an is also honored as the holy word of God, and not the words of the prophet Muhammad. When we dissect the word Islam we also make some surprising discoveries. The Semitic root word slm means the peace that comes from submission to God.

      So Islam specifically references the submission of an individual’s will to the will of the creator. Furthermore, the word Muslim translates as one who has submitted in Arabic. This means that prophets like Abraham and Jesus are also Muslims, in the Islamic worldview, because they submitted completely to God’s will.

      Islam the Religion of Peace

      It’s interesting to note that the Arabic word Salaam, which means peace, also shares the same root word. In fact Salam or Shalom means peace in both Arabic and Hebrew. This is because both languages are Semitic in origin and very closely related to one another.

      Consequently, Islam is often referred to as The Religion of Peace.

      Christianity and Islam share some startling similarities and origins. Both religions are born from the practices of Semitic peoples in the Middle East. Both religions eschew multiple deities and avow that there is only one true God. Angels exist in both Islam and Christianity, and Muslims have a strong belief in a coming day of judgment.

      Yet, despite the similarities, it has been challenging for both religions to come to reach common ground. This guide will explore the history of Islam and its chief prophet Muhammad. We’ll gain an understanding of the 5 Pillars of Islamic Faith, and uncover the mysteries of the holy Qur’an.

      While volumes have been written about this belief system, most of them are hard to read. When reading about Islam – it’s important to understand that you may encounter beliefs quite different than your own. This guide will serve as a plain English introduction to a sometimes mysterious, and
