    The Playbook for a Dollar & a Dream - Michael A. Wilder

    far.

    INTRODUCTION

    I got a dollar and a dream.

~ J. Cole, Dollar and a Dream III

    Rapper

/Playbook/ A book containing set offensive and defensive plays and strategies that a team uses to have an edge over their competition. It contains diagrams, pictures, and other instructions that can be memorized and executed over a short period of time with repetition and practice. It is a resource most commonly used in sports, especially football; however, it can also be invaluable in your personal and professional life.

    ~Michael A. Wilder

    Attorney and Writer

I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING—do we really need another The Playbook self-help book? Short answer, nope! The good news is there is no other book like this one. Here’s why:

Years ago I participated in a Chicago Public School (CPS) program called Real Men Read. CPS launched the program to inspire kids to improve their reading skills and introduce them to men who value education. I was one of many men from a wide range of professional backgrounds that volunteered to read to male and female students and promote positive male role models. I did so once a month on the South Side of Chicago. I would read stories to the kindergarten through sixth graders. For junior high students, I held more of a town hall discussion and went into detail about being a first-generation college graduate and my career path to becoming a lawyer. From there I asked students what they wanted to be when they grew up. Most telling, the vast majority of them could not explain how they would go from their current position in life (a student) to their ultimate dream career (doctor, lawyer, fireman, nurse, police officer, business owner, professional athlete, etc.). This concerned me and prompted me to write this book. This is a guide to help bridge the gap between where you are today mentally, academically, financially, career-wise, and relationship-wise, and where you want to be—the realization of your dreams in these areas.

Imagine you are going through a human-sized maze called Life. You enter on one side of the maze and your goals are on the other, near the exit. Like all mazes, there are many twists, turns, and dead ends. Then imagine arrows suddenly appearing telling you which way to go to find the elusive exit. Each chapter of this book is an arrow to help guide you in the direction to reach your life goals.

This book aims to help you obtain and maintain the right mentality to understand your true purpose. From there, it will help you develop and promote your personal brand.

If you are preparing to go to college or are already there, this book will help you go for free, or at the very least, at reduced costs. It will also help you choose the right school, major, and career path.

For those of you already in the workforce, it will help you pursue a career as opposed to a job, assist you with personal finance decisions, challenge you to build an honest budget, and help you dress for success.

For everyone, it will break down dating in ways that are usually only discussed behind closed doors and among close friends, examining the impact of social media, online dating, and dating apps. This is important because the person you choose to spend your life with permanently or temporarily can alter your aspirations, positively or negatively.

My goals are for you to learn a few things, laugh hysterically at times, and to use this book as a guide for life’s expected and unexpected journeys.

Now, let’s talk about what this book is not about. This is not a memoir. I do not like writing about myself; that gets weird.

This is not a get rich quick book. If it were, this would be the shortest book ever written: Chapter 1: Win the Mega Millions or Powerball. The End.

This is not a dating guide on how to be a player. If you have to read a book to figure that out, then it is just not a part of your DNA makeup. And this is actually not a self-help book; it’s a self-empowerment manual. My ninth grade art teacher lectured me enough about being a better me and digging deeper within myself. Seriously, for art class! That drove me nuts. As you can see, I am still traumatized. That is why I hope this book doesn’t just help you in life, but that it empowers you.

Now, I double-dare you to keep reading. I promise you, the rewards are worth your investment.

    CHAPTER 1

    BELIEVE IN YOU

"I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career.

I have lost almost 300 games.

On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot,

    and I missed.

I have failed over and over and over again in my life.

And that is why I succeed."

    ~Michael Jordan

Former NBA Player and Owner of the Charlotte Hornets

MICHAEL JORDAN WAS CUT FROM his high school basketball team. He went on to win six NBA Championships.

Tennis player Stan Smith was denied an opportunity to be a lowly ball boy for a Davis Cup tennis match because organizers felt he was too clumsy and uncoordinated. Smith went on to win the Wimbledon, U.S. Open, and eight Davis Cups.

TV icon Oprah Winfrey was fired from her job as a television reporter because she was considered unfit for TV.

Tyler Perry was abused by his father as a child and lived on the streets of Atlanta with no money as a young adult. He is now one of the most successful entertainers on stage, TV, and movies.

Movie executives told actor Harrison Ford, who reached iconic status playing Indiana Jones, that he did not have what it takes to be a star when acting in his first film.

Famed director Steven Spielberg was rejected from the University of Southern California School of Theater, Film, and Television three times before making it big in the movie industry.

One of the best-selling artists of all time, Elvis Presley, was fired after one performance and told by the manager of a famous concert hall, You ain’t going nowhere, son. You ought to go back to driving a truck.

Author Stephen King’s first book, the classic thriller Carrie, received 30 rejections, finally causing King to throw the manuscript in the trash. He quickly got over his frustration, and he didn’t give up. To date, his 54 published novels have sold more than 350 million copies, many of which have been adapted into feature films, miniseries, television shows, and comic books.

American writer and philosopher Robert Pirsig was rejected 121 times before finally finding a publisher for his classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which then sold 5 million copies.

Author J.K. Rowling hit the jackpot with Harry Potter; but before she published the series of novels she was nearly penniless, severely depressed, divorced, and simultaneously single parenting while attending school and writing a novel. She went from depending on welfare to survive to being one of the richest women in the world in a span of only five years.

Henry Ford went broke five times before he founded the Ford Motor Company.

Bill Gates dropped out of college to start a botched first business with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen before creating the global empire Microsoft.

Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper because he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.

R.H. Macy headed several unsuccessful businesses before he hit the big time with his New York City store.

Thomas Edison made 1,000 fruitless attempts at creating the light bulb, and teachers told him early on that he was too stupid to learn anything.

After numerous fails at creating flying devices, several years of hard work, and tons of ineffective prototypes, Orville and Wilbur Wright created a plane that could get airborne and stay in flight.

Nobel Prize winner Albert Einstein, whose name is now synonymous with genius, did not speak until he was four and did not read until he was seven, causing his teachers and parents to think he was mentally handicapped, slow, and anti-social.

English physicist and mathematician Sir Isaac Newton was undoubtedly a genius when it came to math, but he did not do particularly well in school or business.

Are you noticing a pattern? Success does not come easy. It also does not come overnight. It takes hard work, dedication, and commitment. Most importantly, you have to believe in you; if you don’t, no one else will.

A part of believing in you requires never giving up on your dream. If Henry Ford had given up, we would not have the Ford Mustang, Explorer, or F150, to name a few. If Bill Gates and Paul Allen had thrown in the towel, Microsoft Windows, the Internet Explorer, the Xbox, and Microsoft Surface would not exist. Their commitment to their dreams changed the world and our everyday
