    Portrait Photography

Master Portrait Photography... In A Day!

    Introduction To Portrait Photography

When a person wants to get the most out of their photography, they should always be looking for ways to remain versatile. Versatility is the key for adapting to a lot of the circumstances in front of them. There are a variety of things that can happen out in the field when taking on photography projects. This makes it difficult for people to truly make their art come forth the way that it should. When people are versatile though, they will be able to get past any kind of situation that will help them. The more a person knows how to do in terms of their photography, the better chance they will have to adapt to these circumstances.

For instance, if a person is only used to shooting indoors, they would be thrown for a loop if the subject suggests going out to the park for some shots, since the weather is nice. Likewise, a photographer that is used to manufacturing their own light would have a tough time using only natural light out in the field if something happened to their lamps or batteries. The best way to not be side-tracked by these sort of issues is to always be learning and to never be satisfied with the work that a person already knows. People should always be analysing their skills and the things that need work. By constantly strengthening weaknesses, a person will be able to take their abilities to new heights.

In a lot of times, people’s egos prevent them from getting better. It can be a humbling experience to start from scratch and not how to do something, especially if a person is skilled in other areas. But this is the most important thing that a photographer has to deal with, so that they are able to always pick their skill level up and compensate for things that they might not be good at. If a person is interested in becoming a photographer for a living, it will be incredibly important to learn as much as possible. When picking up the pieces and learning the information that will work best, photographers are better able to draw in new customers that are willing to help them out. This will give people the opportunity to make a photographer well rounded, which means that they can get bigger and better opportunities not only to make more money, but also to enhance the journey that a person experiences when they get to better themselves and take on new challenges. The best way to look at it is to never stop learning and to never be satisfied. When a person looks at it in this manner, they will be able to always be fulfilled.

#1: Start By Getting The Best Possible Equipment

While the equipment is not everything, people should make sure that they start out by providing themselves with the best equipment possible for digital portraits. Even if a person does not truly understand the ins and outs of photo equipment, experts have given some recommendations for people looking to take their portraits to the next level. For instance, anybody looking to maximize on their portraits should know that DSLR cameras are the cream of the crop. This type of camera has grown in popularity throughout the years, due to the fact that it delivers sharp images and also gives people the opportunity to shoot high quality video. For a person looking to get started in digital photography portraits, it would be wise to get a camera that is at least 50 mm, with a lens measurement of 1.4. This will give people the added bonus that they need to take sharp images, even while they are learning.

The beauty of this day and age is that people can get their hands on an inexpensive DSLR by shopping second hand markets like Craigslist, eBay and Amazon. Technology moves so fast that people are always in the market to sell their gently used electronics, as they upgrade to newer models. The beauty of this is that when a new model comes out, the price drops significantly on any older models. So a person looking to get started can work wonders with a gently used DSLR as they move forth and begin getting plenty of practice taking portraits. A lot of people have particular brands that they swear by, so people should always figure out which brand works best for them. This way, the photographer can gain some comfort and familiarity with the camera as they learn the ins and outs.

With this said, people who cannot afford the top of the line equipment should still look into online reviews and purchase themselves a camera that is of good quality in their price range. The skills of the photographer is what matters the most, but people will give themselves a better chance to succeed and do their best work as long as they find cameras that will push their skills to the limit and make it so that they are able to produce the best level of work possible when taking portraits.

#2: Play Around With Camera Angles

New photographers quickly find that their work goes to the next level when they do something so simple as realize that they don’t have to hold the camera at eye level. When people are married to the idea of holding the camera at eye level before shooting, they are robbing themselves of many different perspectives and angles that they otherwise would not have been able to take advantage of. By lowering or raising the camera, photographers will open themselves up to a wealth of different angles and perspectives, which can completely change the look and appeal of a digital portrait. This will allow photographers to play with different moods with the photos, which will create an entirely different aesthetic appeal. The photographer should take the camera away from their face and begin to look into ways that they can shoot the same portrait at angles that they otherwise would not have thought of. This will bring out different features in the subject’s face, along with their clothing and the background surroundings. It will take people giving themselves the ability to open up the angles and perspectives first before they will be able to maximize on this capability. When a person does something as simple as taking the camera away from their face, their mind will also open up to possibilities that they had initially shut themselves out from. Instead of shutting oneself out from these possibilities, a new photographer will begin to feel that they are opening a portal to new and different angles and perspective, by taking such a simple step.

As an experiment, the photographer should use this information and immediately begin taking photos both from overhead and beneath the subject. This also can help the photographer get creative in this aspect, since they will have to use different tools and objects in order to give them these vantage points. When shooting overhead, on a chair, ladder, stairs or other fixture that elevates the photo, the photographer will have to point down at the subject and will be able to find a variety of different perspectives and angles that they did not previously think possible. Likewise, a person can kneel, sit or set up shop on lower elevation in order to aim upward at the subject. When playing with these different angles above, beneath and to the side of the subject, the photographer will notice that the light will hit their face in a drastically different way, which will make the picture come out just as drastically different. This will provide people with new ways to play around with these elements, in order to pick out the best possible photo based upon these attributes.

Keep in mind that this step will take a whole lot of trial and error and it will not necessarily come out perfectly the first time. This gives people the chance to flex their creativity and truly make the most out of the skills they may have learned in photography classes.

#3: Take The Subject Somewhere They Normally Wouldn’t Go

When people become comfortable, they sometimes get so relaxed that they would not allow their actual personality to shine through. For instance, if a person is taking a photo of a farmer, they might not get much emotion out of them by taking shots of them on the farm, doing the same things that they do every single day. However, if a person was to take the farmer into the city, amongst skyscrapers and public transportation, the scenery would likely reveal some emotion in the subject that they otherwise would not have shown. The beauty of this is that this can’t be faked, so the photographer will get pure emotion out of their subject, which will bleed into the photo and provide a wonderful aesthetic appeal. This does not have to necessarily be an extreme change, but the key to keep in mind is to push the subject out of their comfort zone.

When scheduling a digital portrait session, allow the subject to come up with some locations that they want to use, while agreeing that the photographer can also select locations of their own. This way, if the subject is too uncomfortable or does not like the locations that they photographer chose, they have the consolation of knowing that some of the shots were taken within their comfort zone as well. In life as well as in art, the best and most rewarding things manifest when people are pushed out of their comfort zone. When scientists are pushed up against the wall, with no way out, they get creative and find ways to change the world. Likewise, when athletes are pushed to the brink of adversity, they are forced to bounce back and overcome it. The same applies to art. Nothing special comes about unless the artist is willing to take a chance.

Photographers who want to create wonderful portraits that are better than the run of the mill photos that everybody makes will need to also take some chances. One of the most rewarding chances to take is to change the venue and give the subject something new to think, feel or experience. It can also provide a bit of irony if the subject is known for a certain element of life, but the location counteracts that lifestyle. For instance, a newspaper reporter wanting to shine some light on a politician’s personality would really turn some heads if they took a portrait of them on a motorcycle or engaging in recreation. It would catch people’s eyes because they are used to seeing their political figures in suits, sitting around large tables and conducting monotonous business. Taking this unique portrait will be a lot more rewarding than taking the same boring suit and tie photo in front of the flag or behind a desk.

When the photographer wants to truly push their art to the next level, they should start to get creative with the settings, even if it is out of the subject’s comfort zone.

#4: Use The Built In Features Of The Digital Camera

In this day and age, all cameras come with a host of fancy bells and whistles that can be gold in the hands of the right photographer. People who want to understand how to push their cameras to the next level, in order to maximize on their talent, should make sure
