check for periodontal (gum) disease would reveal that at least nine out of ten adults have some evidence of gum disease at this time, and it would be safe to say that very few of them know they have it (it’s generally painless until it’s too late). Gum disease isn’t just the major cause of tooth loss and bad breath anymore. Even though both of these conditions are serious enough by themselves, periodontal disease is a far more serious health condition than either bad breath or tooth loss because it is very closely associated with several systemic health conditions, including arteriosclerosis, heart attacks, lung disease, premature births, rheumatoid arthritis, strokes, and more. In fact, the connection between periodontal disease and these severe systemic conditions has been confirmed by studies reported in the dental media. There is a common link in all this and it is largely avoidable, but only if the person with the gum disease knows what to do.
The fact is, if a person decided today to try and take control of, or even reverse, their gum disease by making changes in their home-care efforts, the odds are nearly 100 percent that they would be unsuccessful, and that they would likely damage their health further by using products purportedly formulated to combat gum disease that are actually harmful—products such as commonly available mouthwashes and
