ACT I
THE FLIGHT
On the stage there can be seen the constituent elements of a monastic cell. The walls are white and bare, only a humble wooden crucifix without ornaments which are not distinguished can be seen in the middle. A low and poorly bed equipped with a mattress and a pillow filled with straw and covered by a shabby and rough blanket. A table and a chair which seem to have been made by a person unaccustomed to art of carpentry. There are writing tools, sheets of papers covered with inscriptions and drawings worthy of an old alchemist and a stack of tattered books on the table. There are Giordano and Dogmaticus on the stage. Both wear the regular frock for the Dominican monks. Dogmaticus sits on the bed and Giordano at the table.
DOGMATICUS: (He speaks rarely and with parental care. ) Giordano, I remember as it was yesterday, the moment when your parents brought you to Naples in order you to gain knowledge of the secrets of the Christian teaching. I was looking into the eyes of an ingenuous, good and hungry for knowledge child. You came to our Abbey, San Domenico Maggiore
, at the age of your manliness where you were welcomed with delight and hope. The Abbot of that time said you would be a reason of pride for the Dominican Monks’ Order once . (He shakes his grey-haired head reproachfully). If only he could know how wrong he was.
GIORDANO: (He speaks calmly even if a huge concern and sadness can be read on his young face.) If only you knew how wrong you are. When you join a religious order, the sine qua non condition is to accept its precepts entirely and undoubtedly. I have done that unaware of what I agreed with and without knowing these rules cannot be changed or enriched. A brilliant mind is like a bird in a cage for the leaders of the Church.
DOGMATICUS: ( He answers harshly and seems he hardly refrains from let free his wrath which tries him.) How can
