SEATTLE DETECTIVE MIKEN LARSEN'S PROBE INTO THE DEATH OF A YOUNG WOMAN IN CHINATOWN TURNS INTO A BLOODY HUNT FOR A PROFESSIONAL KILLER INVOLVED IN CHINESE CYBERCRIME AND INTERNATIONAL SEX SLAVE TRAFFICKING. The young Chinese woman lying dead in the dank Seattle alley was murdered with no apparent motive. To find her killer Detective Miken Larsen must dive deep into the ugly world of human trafficking, and she soon discovers that young prostitutes are not the only commodity the traffickers smuggle. The CIA has a big piece of the puzzle, but their agenda does not include sharing information with local cops-not even when three more seemingly unconnected people die.

***LibraryThing Giveaway***I almost quit reading this crime novel a few times because frankly it was not cohesive in the beginning. Nothing made sense and the book sort of dragged at first. Towards the end it picked up and became whole. In fact the last few chapters were downright entertaining. I think with a little more practice the author could do some wonderful things with his writing. An OK read.

Richard Kelley has put so much work his book that I feel bad about panning it, so I will give a bit of personal background before I get into why I did not read to the end.I have been reading novels about China for about 50 years beginning with Pearl Buck on my grandmother's shelves and on through all sorts of stories about warriors and heroes and scholars and women. For anyone with this kind of reading background and, I believe, for many people who have read Memoirs of a Geisha, this book is more of the same, despite the detective story overlay.I received a review copy of this book through LibraryThing.com.

A Name to Die for was a fast paced read about a sex trafficking ring operating through China and into the Pacific Northwest. A Chinese operative uses the trafficking ring as a front to enter the country illegally and continue her mission. This book is equal parts disturbing and engaging. I'll never understand the obsession with repetitively highlighting the torture the sex slaves must endure or the Detective's sex life. The point could have been made without a constant reminder of the heinous treatment of the defenseless Chinese women. And the reiteration of Larsen's sex life adds nothing to the story at all. Maybe it's meant to be a filler?Nonetheless, the plot is engaging and draws you in. Every page provides a new turn of events. For those that enjoy crime thrillers, I would recommend this book.**I was gifted this book for free in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to the author and/or publisher.

I won this book through LibraryThings.com for the author in exchange for an honest review. I really had high hopes for this book since the synopsis was very powerful and caught my eye. For me it was just ok. I found to many issues with the story that drove me nuts and made me keep putting it down, and starting something else in between. I did not like how the author blended the many stories together by not separating them by a new chapter. It was just one paragraph after another with no real time lapse in between. For me there were also way too many characters to keep up with. After awhile I could not figure out who was who and why they were in that particular point in the story. I did not understand the random inserts about Detective Miken Larksen's sex life and some other questionable paragraphs. It was too random, had nothing to do with the story, again with time lapse, and added characters. Detective Larksen's character seemed too tv cop personality to me.I read a lot of detective, law, mysteries but this one just didn't do it for me.

Seattle Detective Miken Larksen trots out both her kick-ass investigative skills and her seemingly insatiable appetite for one night stands as she attempts to find a cold blooded Chinese killing machine. The story interweaves international espionage together with abduction, sex trafficking, and murder. Both the local police and the CIA are working the case, albeit, from different perspectives, and much of the story centers around their respective efforts to solve the case. However, since each agency has uncovered only certain pieces of the puzzle, it will take collaboration between the groups to get the job done. I found this story to be extremely entertaining - it had me from the first chapter and kept my interest until the very end. I had planned to read this book a little at a time over the next week but once I got started, I found that I couldn't seem to put it down for long.

The story is really gripping in telling about the dark side of people. Kelley has really done his research in narcotics, prostitution, and the way police work. Great Story. Set aside the time to read, Cause once started you won't be able to put it down till done.

I received this book as an ebook free from the author through LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. Lots of twists and turns and action that starts out with the drug related murder of a back-alley prostitute that leads to a sex trafficking ring which a Chinese operative uses to enter the country illegally and an international conspiracy. This was an excellent book that I couldn’t put down. I would like to see Miken and Bobby work together in the future.
