About this ebook

Nia learned the truth about her boss and now lover Casey Johnson on Halloween night. She walked in his office and after the shock of learning he was a shifter and lovemaking that made her blood boil, she was now a team member of the elusive Army Beast Unit and Casey’s fiancée. She was happy, and everything was perfect. That alone should have told her that a wrench would be thrown into the delicate relationship they were trying to build. Trouble came in the form of his mother who wore diamonds while in her bathrobe and threw around money like it was nothing but paper. Katherine Johnson also looked at Nia like she was less than nothing and made no attempt to hide her distaste at their relationship. Would his mother succeed in tearing them apart by any means necessary, or would their love stand fast against her meddling ways?

    Dedication

For the men and women who came home with memories of friends lost in the grip of war. For the families who have clutched a folded flag and wished with all their might to see the husband, father, mother, sister, or brother… The ones we call soldiers. We are humbled by your courage and honor. We grieve your loss, and while you may be gone from this earth, you will never be forgotten. Dahlia.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. -John Fitzgerald Kennedy

The day was gray, and freezing rain mixed with the icy sleet that fell in North Carolina. Winter was not always as cold as some cities, and you could get away with wearing a light jacket. But not this day in February. The chill was bitter and sank into her bones although Nia wore the warmest wool coat her uniform could allow. The funeral procession was a grim one, and each shot of the gun salute made her jump even though she was expecting it.

Around her each man’s face carried such grief that she could hardly bear looking at them. Casey clutched her hand so tight that her fingers ached, but she wouldn’t ever tell him to let go. They had lost one of their own, a brother in more ways than one. Stavros, a solider in every aspect of the word fell protecting his friends, the unit of the Army Beasts.

He was sent to his final rest with full military honors, but no wife was there to mourn him. He didn’t get that chance. Instead the flag that was folded tight was handed to Casey, and every one of them put their hand on the cloth as if it was one last tenuous hold to Stavros and could bring him back from the grave. As the bugle played the mournful Taps in honor of the fallen soldier, they all saluted, and it was the only time that Casey let her hand go. She was a solider as well for at least another few weeks when her contract was up. Even so it was engrained in her blood forever, and she held her hand stiffly as any man while they paid homage to the black casket before them.

The last note wailed away taken by the breeze to the skies, and the sense of finality settled in. There would be no more quirky jokes or dumb gags where the unit was housed. She wouldn’t have the chance to be mesmerized by his unique coloring or soft fur when he padded into the room in his second skin. Stavros was the only white tiger in the unit, and it echoed in the world because like the tiger he was a rare kind of person. There was an empty space that no one could consider filling. She would owe a debit of gratitude to Stavros, one she could never repay. He died saving Casey’s life, and for that she saw the guilt wracking Casey everyday since they came back. She was the transcriber for the unit, and hearing the last mission
