      Welcome to Tunisian Crochet for Baby! Whether you are making a gift or getting ready for a precious bundle of your own, this book gives you a variety of adorable projects—from quick and easy hats to cozy sweaters—to choose from.

      This book is intended for people who are already comfortable with basic crochet stitches (chain, single crochet, and double crochet). Before you start the projects, review basic crochet instructions in the back of the book if you need to.

      Tunisian crochet allows you to use your crochet hook to create fabrics that look knitted or woven. All of the basics are explained in the back of the book. (If you are new to Tunisian crochet and want more detailed instructions on how to get started with the technique, you might find my book Tunisian Crochet: The Look of Knitting with the Ease of Crocheting helpful.) Instructions for any special stitches or techniques are included in the patterns or in the Techniques section.

      Symbol charts are also provided for each pattern. These visual representations are included to help make specific sections of the patterns easy to understand. See page 132 for instructions on how to read charts.

      Reference materials, including information on yarn and hook suppliers, a yarn weight chart, and sizing charts, appear at the end of the book.

      MEASUREMENTS

      34 in. (86.5 cm) square

      MATERIALS

      Lion Brand Yarn Cotton-Ease (50% cotton, 50% acrylic; 3.5 oz./100 g; 207 yd./188 m)

      Color A: Almond (099), 4 skeins

      Color B: Hazelnut (125), 4 skeins

      U.S. size J-10 (6 mm) Tunisian crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)

      Tapestry needle

      GAUGE

      15 sts and 15 rows in pattern = 4 in. (10.2 cm), blocked

      Special Stitch

      Tunisian Front Post Double Crochet (Tfpdc) Yo, insert hook around both strands of vertical bar or around post, as indicated in pattern, yo, pull up lp, yo, pull through 2 lps—1 lp added to hook.

      Notes

      1. When changing colors, do not cut yarn unless instructed to do so.

      2. For the Tunisian front post double crochet stitches in this pattern, you’ll be working around both strands of the next stitch two rows below (or around the post of a Tfpdc stitch two rows below). The hook remains at the front of the work.

      3. See page 130 for step-by-step photos and instructions for working Tunisian front post double crochet.

      The first Tfpdcs will be worked into the stitch 2 rows below.

      Tfpdcs in following rows will be worked around the posts of previous Tfpdcs.

      Pattern

      With A, ch 120.

      Row 1: Tss in second ch from hook and in each ch across—120 lps on hook. Return.

      Row 2: Sk first vertical bar. *Tss in next st. Repeat from * across—120 lps on hook. Return, changing to B when 2 lps remain on hook.

      Row 3: Sk first vertical bar. Tfpdc around both strands of next vertical bar of Row 1. *Tss in each of next 2 vertical bars of Row 2, Tfpdc around both strands of next vertical bar of Row 1. Repeat from * across to final st. Tss in final st—120 lps on hook. Return.

      Row 4: Sk first vertical bar. *Tss in next st. Repeat from * across—120 lps on hook. Return, changing to A when 2 lps remain on hook.

      Section of Pattern

      Row 5: Sk first vertical bar. Tfpdc around post of first Tfpdc two rows below. *Tss in each of next 2 vertical bars. Tfpdc around post of next Tfpdc two rows below. Repeat from * across to final st. Tss in final st—120 lps on hook. Return.

      Row 6: Repeat Row 4, changing to B when 2 lps remain on hook.

      Row 7: Sk first vertical bar. Tfpdc around post of first Tfpdc two rows below. *Tss in each of next 2 vertical bars, Tfpdc around post of next Tfpdc two rows below. Repeat from * across to final st. Tss in final st—120 lps on hook. Return.

      Row 8: Repeat Row 4, changing to A when 2 lps remain on hook.

      Repeat Rows 5–8, working 2 rows in each color, until blanket measures approximately 35.5 in. (90 cm). Cut B after final repeat of Row 8.

      Next Row: Repeat Row 5.

      Final Row: Sk first vertical bar. Sc in each stitch across, inserting hook in each st as for Tss—119 sc.

      Fasten off.

      Finishing

      With tapestry needle, weave in ends. Lightly steam block on WS.

      14.5 in. (37 cm) around; 7 in. (18 cm) from brim to crown

      Row 2: Sk first vertical bar. *Tps in next 2 sts, Tks in next 2 sts. Repeat from * across until 3 sts remain. Tps in next 2 sts, Tks in final st—48 lps on hook. Return.

      Rows 3–4: Repeat Row 2. Change to B at end of Row 4 return when 2 lps remain on hook. Do not cut A.

      Row 5: Sk first vertical bar. *Tss in next st. Repeat from * across—48 lps on hook. Return.

      Row 6: Repeat Row 5, changing to A when 2 lps remain on hook. Do not cut B.
