About this ebook

Lucas Kiefer has lived through hell. Assaulted and nearly murdered by a man obsessed with him, he now lives with horrible scars inside and out. Abandoned by his boyfriend while trying to recover, Lucas withdraws into himself. Building a new life, he focuses only on running his bookstore. But his nightmare returns when ten years later, his attacker is released from jail on a technicality.

Sheriff Nicholas Demetris has known and loved Lucas for five years. He doesn't care about physical scars; he's attracted to the silently strong man inside. He knows Lucas feels more for him than he'll admit. Despite being well aware of Nicholas's feelings, Lucas won't allow anyone close, regardless of the feelings in his heart, especially now when he's once again the focus of unwanted and deadly intentions. Lucas can't stand the idea of anyone being hurt for him, but Nicholas is determined to protect him and earn Lucas's love no matter what.

I held off reading this for a long time because the name of the book coupled with the cover of a sweet young man made me think this was about a couple who come together because they both really care about a developmentally disabled kid. Nope. This book had almost no substance. The plot was definitely an excuse for the romance. The promised thriller aspect was lame. The fact that the two have been in love and best friends for five years with Nic telling Lucas all the time that he doesn't care about the scars and yet Lucas still has no self-esteem and thinks he is unattractive so he won't have a sexual relationship, is just ridiculous, especially when Nic sees pictures of Lucas's back

This is my complete synopsis of the book in 20 short lines:
Evil guy: I hate Lucas because I loved him.
    Nic: I love you Lucas.
    Lucas: Let's just be friends.
    Nic: I love you Lucas.
Lucas: It can never be more.
Evil guy: I will kill you Lucas and make you suffer. But I will hurt your boy first.
    Lucas: I love you Nic.
    Nic: I love you Lucas.
Lucas: I love you, too, but we can't have more.
    Nic: I love you Lucas.
    Lucas: Okay. Let's fuck.
Nic: I will go and leave you all alone so I can deal with what is most likely a distraction.
Evil guy: Lucas you will now die.
    Lucas: No.
Evil guy: Then I will hurt Nic.
    Lucas: No.
    Lame fight scene.
    Nic: I love you Lucas.
    Lucas: I love you, too.

I was putting off reading this until my husband went to work as I was sure it was going to be a tear-jerker. As it turned out, it wasn't, which was an enormous surprise as I weep at just about any provocation. Gotta admit, I was a bit disappointed this book didn't hit me more emotionally. It started off beautifully: angry protagonist, shut-off survivor, heroic cop in love with our survivor... I think it was a pacing issue. The rush to get the MCs together made it seem as if Nic was pushing Lucas, who gave in with little fight because he was just too damn tired to keep saying no. I know that wasn't the intention but the speed of it did dull the emotion I wanted to feel at these two boys finally getting together.

Riley was suitably creepy and unbalanced - he scared the beejesus out of me! Again, the pace put me off a little. It started well but it felt a bit like a rush to get to the ending. I would have liked a bit more creepy Riley stalking Lucas which, in turn, would bring Nic and Lucas closer.

But this was an enjoyable read, the sex was sweet and hot (which is my favourite kind of sex), and the characters nicely rounded.

I've no one to blame but myself. the reviews warned me but still I downloaded this trite and badly written tale. Lucas Kiefer was assaulted by an insane card board cut out villain 10 years ago and never got over it. He hasn't had sex with anyone else since then. Five years ago Sheriff Nicholas Demetris met him and wanted him but only now, when the card board crazy is on his way back, does the opportunity arise to make his move. Even this description is better than the actual short story. The writing is banal, the characterization is nonexistent and the plot is achingly predictable. There is so much better stuff out there, don't bother with this one.
