About this ebook

The Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle was the first rifled firearm issued to every soldier in the British Army, and gave the infantry a revolutionary increase in firepower. First issued in 1853, the Enfield proved itself worthy during both the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny, where its long range, durability, and interchangeable parts made it a perfect campaign rifle. However, it was during the American Civil War that the Enfield saw the greatest use, with over a million rifles being sold to the armies of both the North and South. This title takes an in-depth look at the design, the history, the mechanics, and the use of one of the most important firearms of the 19th century.

Interesting treatise on the 1853 Enfield musket that was used in the British Empire from the Crimean War to the Indian Mutiny, and then in the American Civil War. This was a popular musket used both by the Union and Confederate forces. This book discusses the development of the rifle, from the infantry model to the artillery and cavalry carbines, and Indian Service Enfields. Technological advances in the model are discussed, and the improved accuracy and range of the minie ball used with the barrel-loading musket. Recommended for those with an interest in 19th century military tactics, military technology, the Crimean War, the American Civil War and the Indian Mutiny. Anyone who owns an original Enfield musket, or a reproduction used in reenactments, will appreciate this book.
