Chapter 1
The Ex Factor
As painful as this thing has been…can't be with no one else. The words to the song playing on the CD player on her built-in, custom-made oak entertainment center frolicked through Teal's head. Whenever she and Tyrone were on the off-again
segment of their seven-year on-again, off-again
relationship, she always found a song to become the anthem to express exactly what she was going through. In this case, it was Ex Factor
by Lauryn Hill.
As she thought about Tyrone, her first real love, Teal softly ran her natural square shaped, medium-length nails up and down the 5x8-foot soft rug made of llama fur. Tyrone had purchased the handmade rug two years earlier while on their eight-day, seven-night vacation; a vacation that included a cruise that made a pit stop in the beautiful Bahamas.
Nassau was the Caribbean island where they were supposed to have gotten married two years ago. But that time, like the three times before that, Tyrone had come up with an excuse as to why getting married at that particular time and place wasn't right. It wasn't until two days before their departure, while Teal was packing her sexy lingerie that she’d planned to consummate their marriage in, that Tyrone had decided to drop the news to her about not wanting to get married on their trip after all.
Teal had just placed the last of her lingerie items in her carry-on when she’d proceeded to pack her lounging wear. Baby, this is what I'm going to wear to dinner later on in the evening the day we get married,
Teal had said, holding up the sheer, leopard print, oversized scarf that draped down to her ankles when she wrapped it around her five-foot, six-inch, size fourteen frame. She had been a size sixteen only two months prior to her sitting there packing her luggage for the much anticipated get-away. But she had been dieting and exercising so that she would look good on her wedding day. Down ten pounds and a dress size, Teal was pleased with her efforts.
Uhh, well, uhh, yeah, it looks all right,
Tyrone had stammered as he laid in the bed watching ESPN while Teal poked her head and arm out of the walk-in closet to show him the scarf-like body wrap.
I'm going to wear a tube top under it and that one black mini-skirt I got from Macy's. My Nine West 'Isha' ankle strap sandals are what's really going to set it off.
Teal retrieved the pair of shoes she had just mentioned to Tyrone and held them up for him to look at.
Unlike most men, Tyrone had taken, and still took, a genuine interest in his woman, how she dressed, as well as her hairstyles. He was big on being an amazing looking couple and representing one another well. So he gladly provided input in Teal’s appearance when it was requested.
Uhh, well, uhh, yeah, they look all right.
Tyrone never took his eyes off of the television.
Just all right?
Teal whined as she dropped the shoes and crooned her way over to her man. That's two all rights in a row and I want to look better than just all right for my husband-to-be on our wedding day and night. I want to be more than all right when you make an honest woman out of me under God’s eyes.
Teal flopped down on the bed, positioning herself right in front of Tyrone. She sat up on her elbow and rested the side of her face in the palm of her hand.
Tyrone pretended to have been too involved in the television to return the stare that Teal was giving him. But Teal knew better than to think he was more interested in the TV show than in talking to her about her wardrobe for their trip. Besides, a commercial had been on and Tyrone always flicked the channel whenever a commercial took residence on the screen. He wasn't flicking, which meant he was faking.
Tyrone, look at me,
Teal had said as she gently took him by the chin and turned his face directly toward her. He’d had no choice but to look at her, but somehow he’d managed to look over her head instead of into her eyes. That was something he’d always done right before he was about to let Teal down. It had not gone unnoticed by Teal. He was like a book she’d read over and over and knew exactly what was going to happen next.
Teal shook her head and sighed. We're not getting married this time either, are we, Tyrone?
She didn’t even have to turn the page to get her answer.
The truth had been released from captivity, and it had escaped, not from Tyrone’s mouth, but Teal’s instead. Nope; Tyrone hadn’t had to say a word. His actions
