      LINCOLN County Ontario Canada

      Lincoln County is one of Ontario's historic counties. Lincoln was laid out in 1792. The county is rich in written chronicles as well as possessing many milestones, over the years. Some of the early townships of Lincoln County became home to early history of the Mennonites immigration into Upper Canada, from the late 1700's, nearly a hundred years in advance of Canada's Confederation in 1867.

      This collection of details- Farmers Directory is just one of the many resource documents, available to help researchers of family history or genealogy of Upper Canada, (Ontario) early settlers. The amalgamation of added details from census records, church records, land records, cemetery recordings and other sources will help to form a clearer vision of your ancestors in this area

      In 1970, Lincoln and Welland Counties were amalgamated to form the Regional Municipality of Niagara. Many of the locations, listed in this original publication of a Farmers Directory have dramatically changed in size and related value, as well as, some have had their boundaries and county changed.

      Under the direction of Lord John Graves Simcoe, Upper Canada was divided in several counties, stating in the Niagara district from 1792. Most of this land was well suited to providing great farmlands to assist in the maintenance of an expected flood of immigrants in the upcoming years.

      This naming convention was simple and likely employed to provide some familiarity for many UK immigrants. The counties were to be named after counties or shires within England or Scotland. The township or villages were named after locations within the same area in the UK as the given county name.

      This was not a hard and fast rule for Niagara, sprang from his assigned name for the town of Newark, which never caught on. So much for convention.

      CAISTOR TOWNSHIP

      Following Governor Simcoe's naming convention for Canada’s new localities, gained its name after a village in Lincolnshire, from which Lincoln County had originally received its own moniker.
