Early Cuban History
1) 3100 BCE - First Cuban Settlement
The earliest evidence for human settlement in Cuba dates to approximately 3100 BCE near the modern city of Levisa, which is located in the southeastern region of Cuba. The inhabitants were known to use stone tools and lived the life of hunter-gatherers, meaning that permanent settlement was less favored than easily moveable communities. Over the next several centuries, due to advances in technology and mild weather, these proto-Cuban inhabitants moved from a hunter-gatherer society to an agrarian one. The long growing season allowed the natives (who would later be named the Arawak) to produce a more than ample supply of food for the civilization. In fact, the island of Cuba provided such favorable farming conditions that it played a large part in the economic growth of Spain in the sixteenth century CE.
The Arawak displayed a similar religious structure with many other Central American cultures—ritual sacrifice to appease the gods. This structure makes sense in
