      Car doors slammed shut somewhere nearby. Ella and Shay immediately searched the parking lot to their right for signs of life but didn’t see any, until the SUV sped out of the parking lot, nearly turning on two wheels.

      I guess we were wrong about being the only ones here, Shay said.

      Ella slid the gear shifter into drive and continued forward. She had stopped for a moment to catch her breath, hoping her hands would stop shaking. Running over that zombie guy in the parking lot wasn’t something she’d normally do.

      But this was different.

      This was a matter of survival, of life or death. And maybe those instincts had kicked in.

      She checked the rearview mirror again, having inspected it a dozen times since she burned rubber tearing out of the parking lot. Ella counted her blessings that the infected dude didn’t follow them, but she wasn’t going to
