    Chapter 1

    -

It had started the fall semester of 2010. I was a student at ETSU, and Halloween was coming up.

Meet me, Kevan. I wasn't anybody too classy; I had just hit 20, the odd square who'd go to raves and not drink or smoke, keeping good grades and a small handful of friends. I wasn't a good ol' country boy that cheered for Vols games and didn’t look the part of a native East Tennessean, carrying the hints of a foreign background of lightly bronzed skin and dark hair from the Mediterranean. Video games were my forte and I liked New York styled pizza.

That out of the way, onto the story.

One morning in one of my literature classes, there was an older adult student who laid out an offer to the class before the teacher came in. Going by the name of Brent, he said a friend of a friend was looking for participants for a Halloween event. I wasn't too much of the outgoing type but listened in anyway.

The setup was a riverboat trip and then an actual ghostwalk on a well-known piece of property up in Kingsport. There was supposed to be a dinner and everything too. The whole deal was similar to an attraction.

Till he spelled out one stipulation. You had to dress up. And you had to have two or more people go with you. Dressing up was be tricky; it wasn't a Halloween costume (didn't take place on the same day anyway) but it was a Southern-themed event. So in the end, you were kind of dressing up as a re-enactor. Finding people to go with me seemed even harder. I knew people, but I wasn't that well-acquainted with them to go invite them to tag long, much less dress up with me. They were classmates mostly. Somehow my inner needs nagged me for female companions, something that guided me for the ultimatum I looked at a few days later.

That all drowned away when he mentioned one other important detail. There was also going to be a contest of sorts (it sounded like a see if you're brave enough sort of thing) and would reward almost five hundred dollars. If nothing else got my attention, that most certainly did.

I wasn't a money-chaser, but common sense was in my head for a brief moment, not giving him an immediate answer. The entire risk-gain situation played out in my head for the rest of the day but couldn't weigh if I wanted to go or not. In honesty it seemed more about if I had friends to go with me rather than if I truly wanted to go or not.

I had nearly forgotten about his offer, getting lost in school projects, playing Xbox on the evenings and watching BBC in the late night. It caught my attention again, a horror book on the free lending shelf rack in the library. I then remembered about the event. Was I even going to bother about it? I could care less; but I wasn't going out to anything, mostly a shut-in at this point in the semester. What could it hurt?

A few people had come to mind to ask, which I had gone through already. They weren't interested in going at all, another saying she had something planned that week. However the latter did offer that if I found people, she'd be more than happy to help with the costume requirement.

Two days later in the afternoon, I found myself calling an old connection of mine. Her name was Sophie; I had met her during a brief fall job my freshman year in a grocery market as my coworker. She was never in any of my classes but we saw each other for occasional movie nights in gregarious groups of friends.

The phone clicked as she answered.

    Hey Sophie, I greeted her.

Well, hello! What can I do for you? Was her pleasant reply. She had a Southern-tinged voice that sounded whimsical and laid-back.

I have a stint if you're interested. I leaned back against the brick wall of the library.

Oh really, and what kind of stint do you think will interest me, Mr. Kevan? Her voice had a teasing quality to it, questioning the validity of my idea.

Something that involves five hundred bucks, I think.

Five hundred dollars? There was a scoff. Sounds like a scam. Did you get this online?

Actually, no. It's a guy from one of my lit classes. Has a friend that is hosting an event close to Halloween. He's looking for participants in a contest during some ghostwalking tour.

There was silence for a good moment. Well, sounds a bit odd, but I suppose maybe they'll scare someone so senseless that they don't get the money. Why not? It's October anyway. Any rules?

Uhh, there's a few but the biggest one is we have to dress old-fashioned. So part of it is like a costume party kind of thing.

Well, I don't know what I can drum up for that. I think my aunt has an antique dress or something-

I actually got a connection that'll lend us stuff if needed. I volunteered. We don't have to pay anything.

Free costumes...I suppose you can't be that. What's the date?

    It's the 8th. Thursday night.

Don't have classes then and only one class on Friday later in the morning. Okay, why not? Just the two of us?

For now. I have to go with a company of three so I'm looking for another person right now. The brick wall was starting to get aching, so I stretched and started to walk back towards the dorms.

Okay, just let me know the arrangements. I have to get going now.

    All right, I will. Bye!

I hung up the phone as I left the courtyard of the library. My heart was rushing a small bit; I never went on a ghostwalk, much less with beautiful company I was familiar with. Already I was envisioning Sophie acting in a date-like manner and clinging to my hand.

Yes, I was looking forward to this.

All right, remember that you need to submit your code by midnight tonight. Our programming teacher told me. Students were already streaming out of the classroom as I gathered up my notebook and shoved it in my messenger bag, starting to walk into the hallway.

Hey! A voice called out after me.

I looked back, seeing Maria come towards me. She was a Hispanic, about my age, curvy body, black hair pulled back into a bun. She was toting a large folder in her arms, dressed in a black tank top and white shorts.

Whatcha got going on this weekend? Her voice had a bit of a hoarse tone to it.

Got that project to turn in on Monday, so I'll be spending all weekend to finish it, I continued walking towards the stairwell. She trailed after me and walked in stride with me. "I'll
