    Erich Maria Remarque (Erich Paul Remark’s pseudonym), born in 1898 in Germany and died in 1970 in Switzerland, was one of the great authors interested in human values, such as friendship, solidarity and pacifism (Three Comrades, 1937). He was also a man branded by the time he lived in, and worried about the economic depression (The Black Obelisk, 1956), dictatorship and oppression (A Time to Love and a Time to Die, 1954). His first novels, very poignant, and erroneously and exaggeratedly interpreted at the time of their first printing (some people considered the author to be conveying antinationalist messages in his works), resulted in him losing his German nationality.
