Jerome David Salinger, better known as J. D. Salinger, was an American novelist and short story writer. He was an admirer of Ernest Hemingway (American writer, 1899-1961) and F. Scott Fitzgerald (American writer, 1896-1940), which inspired him to start writing at the age of 15. In 1940, he published his first short story in Story Magazine, and his popularity as an author grew throughout the 1940s thanks to other work he produced which was published in the New Yorker.

As his writing became more successful, Salinger found his newfound celebrity increasingly unbearable, and began isolating himself. His last published work appeared in 1965, after which point he withdrew to a small village in New Hampshire and refused to hold any more interviews with the press. However, his continued silence only served to increase his readers’ curiosity. He died at his home in January 2010.
