Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, usually referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was born in 1828 in Yasnaya in Russia and died in 1910 in Astapovo, Russia. Believed to be one of the major writers of Russian literature, his work was already acclaimed during his lifetime and had a lasting influence. His novels (War and Peace, 1863-1869, Anna Karenina, 1877, Resurrection, 1899) and his many short stories are defined by the significance and depth of his psychological analysis, as well as by their philosophical and moral dimensions. They are testimonies of the importance of the spiritual quest that Tolstoy led throughout his whole life.
