    John Steinbeck (1902-1968) was an American writer whose novels (Of Mice and Men, 1937; The Grapes of Wrath, 1939; East of Eden, 1952, etc.) share two similarities: they are set in his native California and they talk of the difficult living conditions of the rural populations. A reporter for the International Herald Tribune during World War II, Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. Several of his novels have been adapted for the cinema and contributed to his popularity.
