    Born in 1547, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a Spanish writer, playwright and poet who is remembered for being the creator of the first modern novel: El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha (The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, 1605-1615).

    Cervantes fought on the Catholic side during the Battle of Lepanto. While he was travelling back to Spain, he was taken prisoner and spent five years as a slave in Algier. His marriage and his position as public servant did not bring an end to his errant life, because after the failure of his conjugal relationship, he started travelling again and spent some time in prison because he embezzled money while working as a tax collector. His literary career began in 1585 and, although his talent was not recognized while he was alive, Cervantes remains an ideal
