About this ebook
During the Great Depression, many people had to work long hours and were barely paid enough to survive. Cesar Chavez felt this treatment was unfair and worked to secure more rights. He formed a Union and led strikes and marches that forced landowners to increase wages and improve working conditions. This account shows how Chavez inspired others, proving that it was not necessary to resort to violence to produce change.

Reviews for Cesar Chavez

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a simple and clearly written "On My Own" biography about an important figure in California history, Cesar Chavez. Author Ginger Wadsworth does a good job including details about Chavez's early life and the lessons his mother and other family members taught him about human dignity: there is value in hard work, no one should go hungry, and it is important to fix problems with words, not fists. Even though the illustrations by Mark Schroder are colorful and charming, I think my students will also enjoy seeing the photograph of Chavez in the back of the book. The "Afterward" and "Important Dates" will also be useful for putting Chavez's life in perspective.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Easy reader for students to understand the life of Cesar Chavez. Photo in afterword to help students understand history.
