About this ebook

Petrona McGibbon knew that completely uprooting her life and moving to the Caribbean island of Jamaica to open a bed & breakfast/bakery was going to be challenging. What she didn’t expect was that her delectable creations would become the center of a murder investigation.

What should have been an open and shut case takes some unexpected twists. As a seasoned Senior Superintendent of police, Dean Anderson finds himself having to turn to the likes of Petrona’s crazy cousin Maria, and her equally mad cap friend Andrene for assistance.

A mysterious break in at the bakery heats up the investigation as the killer becomes even more daring in their bid to frame the bakery. Will they be able to track down the real killer before the “Sweet Tooth Fairy” is forced to close down for good?

    Chapter one

    Maria! The muffins!

Petrona McGibbon rushed into the kitchen. The smell of burnt cakes was thick in the air. She yanked open the oven and was immediately choked by smoke. Horrified she grabbed an oven mitt and pulled out the shelf. With a clatter, the hot black rocks which should have been her experimental mango muffins hit the tile.

Oh my gosh, Pet! I’m soooooooo sorry!

Both women stood looking in dismay at the ruined muffins. There was absolutely nothing to be redeemed. They were burnt beyond recognition.

Petrona swallowed hard against the huge lump of disappointment that threatened to choke her. Her large green eyes began to swim with tears. She simply could not afford this. Not right now.

With a sigh she knelt on the tile, her fiery red mane swung across her freckled face as she began to clean up the mess. Her cousin, Maria, stood in the doorway, speechless (which was rare) and helpless (which was always).

It’s okay, Maria. There’s no use in crying over spilt milk, or in this case, burnt muffins.

I turned my back for just a second to talk to Andrene. I swear it wasn’t that long.

Petrona pursed her lips to hide her anger. She should have known that nitwit would have something to do with her disaster.

Carefully she piled the burnt mess before rising. Wordlessly she found the broom and bin. With a thunk they hit the bottom and she felt her heart drop. This batch was supposed to be ‘it’.

She had opened the Sweet Tooth Fairy bakery just a month or so ago and the business had not yet wiggled its way into the heart of the community of Port Antonio. She had learned very quickly that Jamaicans were a fickle folk. The novelty of the new bakery had worn off almost immediately after the grand opening. Her one saving grace had been in her choice of a location. It was attached to the Elsa Manor Bed and Breakfast which she had bought last year and the property was right across from the Titchfield High School. She could depend on the students to buy, although it seemed they came more to patronize the water cooler before heading home.

Her shoulders slumped as she exited the kitchen to empty the bin in the heap at the back. She dashed away angry tears as she stumbled back inside. She leaned against the back door for a moment, allowing herself a momentary weakness as a few tears escaped. She could hear all her critics now.

I told you Port Antonio was no place to go take over a bed and breakfast plus a bakery.

Twenty-nine years old and throwing away your degree on a childhood whim and fancy.

You’re a foreigner! An outsider! They’ll never accept you.

You’ll never make it in Jamaica, worse in such a back bush place like Port Anotonio. You’ll be flying home within a month, begging for your job back.

That last one had been from her former boss, Stanley. It had hurt the most as Stanley had been more than her boss. He had also been her fiancé.

She shook away the memories and straightened her shoulders.

If at first you don’t succeed, try and try and try and TRY again and again and AGAIN! Batch number seventeen will be the charm. Thank God it’s mango season so I at least have that in abundance. You’re getting closer Petrona Elizabeth Ronyalee McGibbon. You can do it! She took a deep breath as her little pep talk began to lift her spirits. Yes, she was going to try again. This time she would just watch her precious muffins herself, whether or not nature called. For all she knew Andrene might still be lurking, seeking out yet more ways to distract Maria and wreak more havoc.

As for her dimwit of a cousin, she would sort her out later. But for now she had to get another
