Hello Smashwords audience, my name is Dennard Johnson. The pen name I use is Nard J. Right now I am twenty-six years old. I first started writing at the age of seventeen. I didn't really know how to write or what to write, I just knew that I wanted to write at some point in life. My first few projects didn't pan out because I just didn't take as much interest in them. I was starting college and working full time. I joined the military, then got sidetracked even more. It wasn't until recently that I got the time to actually sit down and put my thoughts on paper and learn how to write. To get a little bit more personal about myself: I grew up in a single parent home and was essentially an only child. I did have older siblings, but they were years older than me. In school I was an all-around athlete and student, however, I wasn't great, but I was above average in just about everything I participated in. In college, I changed my major three different times. First I studied Agriculture, then History and finally Software Engineering. I enjoyed all three, but neither could hold my attention longer than a semester or two. My passion has always been writing and being in control of the words and thoughts in my mind. I hope that you all enjoy the work that I publish here and let me know what you think about it.

    CHAPTER ONE

Who would’ve ever thought that she would’ve come back into his life? Especially now, like this. It had been five years, at least. Tim Coates was sitting in his hotel room in Atlanta looking at the familiar hand writing of the letter that had been left on his bed by the housekeeper. It was from the only woman he thought he could love. That is, until he ran into Alyssa Woods.

Alyssa Woods, or Ally as he called her, was his exact compliment. Her even colored honey brown skin perfectly matched his deep dark chocolate complexion. He stood just south of six-foot and she a petite five-foot-three-inches. She was highly successful in everything she touched and it showed with her being one of the youngest and one of the only female execs that her company boasted.

The day Tim ran into her was a day he would never forget. It came on a warm fall day in southern Arkansas. Tim was at his old high school track getting ready for another day of training when she pulled up in her brand new Mercedes-Benz SL 650. She was the most beautiful thing Tim had laid eyes on.

As she walked out to the infield and started stretching, he couldn’t keep his eyes off of her as he ran his warm-up laps. She noticed him looking but made no attempt to let him know that she had noticed. When she stepped out on the track, it seemed as if she glided as she ran, looking like a young gazelle on the safari. Now this really got his attention and he just knew he had to, some kind of way, get her attention without scaring her off or looking like a complete idiot.

He continued his workout while she kept running, but he was totally unfocused. He even found himself staring at her a few times. Sensing that he was totally unfocused he decided to cut his workout short and go get ready for his meeting with his agent and the executives of a new, up and coming clothing line. Tim didn’t know that Alyssa was a part of this company or that she would be at the meeting later that morning.

Once he got to his truck he took out a sheet of paper and scribbled his name and number and a nice message and left it on her windshield. When she got back to her car, she saw the note and smiled and decided to wait until after the meeting to acknowledge the letter that Tim had penned her ever so quickly.

After the meeting, and a verbal commitment from Tim as a new person the company would like to endorse, Alyssa quickly pulled him aside and invited him to dinner the next day before she left and they hit it off from there. Since then they have been dating on and off but at this present time, they were on. However, things haven’t always been peachy-keen in the Coates/Woods camp. But, that’s expected right?

At least that is what Tim was thinking.

At this point he really didn’t know what to think, especially while holding a letter from the only other woman to hold his heart. She was the one who had pushed him to unbelievably low lows, as well as impossibly high highs. Despite the vast and dramatic up and downs in their relationship, Tim knew he and Deidra loved each other.

Or he wanted to say he knew that.

Maybe that’s why he was having a hard time understanding why this letter now. After all these years, what could she possibly want?

Even though they had had a bad break up, he had stayed cordial with Deidra and let her know that he was there for her if she ever wanted to come back. But yet, she still left anyway. She left him sitting in their empty apartment. Yup, she had cleaned out of all its contents including a good chunk of his clothing. Nevertheless, he bounced like always and let that hurt and pain drive him to yet another record setting and breaking year on the diamond.

Tim Coates had made a lot of noise and gotten the attention of some MLB organizations and got drafted in the first round. He won rookie of the year and led the league in stolen bases as well as runs scored. To top it off, he managed to land a few big endorsements and had even forgotten about her.

    Until now.

Once he had gotten to his room and saw a note on the bed, he figured Ally had left him a message or maybe his mom, that wasn’t uncommon of her especially since it had been a couple of weeks since he had last spoken to her.

    But it wasn’t.

    It was from Deidra.

Her name was written on it in her eccentric handwriting. Tim held it in his hand and his heart beat sped up as he thought about opening it. He took a seat on the edge of the bed near the window and lifted the flap of the envelope and removed the letter. It had a perfume smell on it. Sexy Amber by Michael Kors, he knew the fragrance well. It was her favorite to wear. As he unfolded the paper it simply read:

    "Lobby @8:30pm after your dinner."

Tim found himself smiling at the thought of seeing her again. It had been five years, so this one little meeting couldn’t possibly hurt. As he lay back on his bed and look up, his phone started going off, Hello? Tim said.

Why haven’t you called me yet? Your plane landed almost two hours ago. What have you been doing? Ally blared through from the other side of the phone.

The flight was fine honey, thanks for asking, he said sarcastically. Plus, you know how this Atlanta traffic can be. There was a slight pause. He could tell she was really heated now.

Ally chimed in, Mmmm-hmm, Atlanta traffic. It’s always some excuse with you Tim. Why? She exclaimed. Why can’t you just do right?

Now he was sitting up again, shaking his head. What in the heck are you talking about, Ally? I just made it to the hotel like twenty minutes ago. The whole team did, he said in matter-of-factly tone.

If that was the case, then why has everyone else’s family already known that you all have been there for almost two hours Tim?

"Probably because they decided to call before I did… Look let’s not go through this again. Especially not know. I haven’t been playing
