    $50.00 and a DREAM - Glenn Phillips

    INTRODUCTION

SHELL KNOB IS A unique settlement of individuals. Some came from pioneer families, born in the Shell Knob area, with established deep family roots. Others have come from different areas, drawn to this location by the peaceful tranquility of Table Rock Lake.

Whether a pioneer or other background, this area has become a Mecca for retired seniors. Retired Seniors with Dreams. Some small dreams, some large. Some with sad endings, some with happy times. No matter what the dream, it belongs to you. If your dreams seem impossible, take comfort from this story. After all, To Dream the impossible Dream, isn’t that what gives us drive to continue on? Well, it sure did produce a great song.

How many times have we dreamed of something, then left that dream, feeling that it was just impossible to achieve? This is a true story about the journey of a dream. A journey that had to have divine intervention to achieve, and uplifting community spirit to continue.

There were a lot of reasons for Cathy and me to make a new residence in Shell Knob, little did we know that one of the most compelling would be God’s direction.

Cathy and I moved to Shell Knob in the summer of 1995. Having a weekend home at Table Rock Lake for over 20 years, we knew quite well the peaceful and tranquil surrounding of the Lake. We built our home, and settled in, to become retired citizens of Shell Knob.

Becoming involved in the community was easy. There were many civic organizations that needed volunteers. I volunteered and that gave me activity in both the local business community and the surrounding area.

As time passed it was increasingly evident that the economy and growth of the entire area moved on Tourists and Retirement. Both worked together, as the tourists would come to Shell Knob, their love for the area would grow, and soon they would reappear as retired homeowners, in the growing population.

As the retired community grew and bonded with each other, aging produced a problem. When one spouse would demise, leaving the other spouse, there was a problem in taking care of the surviving spouse and providing a source of Christian Fellowship. Certainly the Churches did a wonderful job, however they were limited.

A small number of us came together in the volunteer spirit of providing a Senior Center, Senior Services and Senior Living facilities for the community.

The following story represents what a group of volunteers can do, if they have the spirit and faith to DREAM.

    THE DREAM BEGINS–1997

IT WAS A TYPICAL autumn day at Table Rock Lake. Beautiful blue sky reflecting in the clear water, with the rustle of autumn leaves, and a cool breeze. We were meeting at the home of Charles Garrison. Dick Nierman, Charles Garrison, and I had been talking about establishing a Senior Center in Shell Knob. With the growing number of retirees coming into our area, it was evident that a Senior Center would provide them with many senior services not currently available.

Now this was not a big business meeting, it was just 3 guys, with some free time, kicking around some ideas. The coffee was good, and the discussion continued until we decided that by golly the time had come to do something.

While talking about our purpose and direction, we decided that our motto would be:

    PERCEIVE—BELIEVE—ACHIEVE

We kinda felt that those words told our story. The Perceive part was our dream that a Senior Center would help our community—The Believe part was our faith in God, and firm resolve that through hard work, and community support, we would make our dream come true—the Achieve part was really our faith that we were doing what needed to be done, and we would find a way to Achieve our dream.

Little did we know there should be one more word in our Motto—Naive—for we had no idea of how long the journey would take, nor the troubled times we would face.

If we had known how long and troubled the journey would be, I think our motto would have been—forget—relax—enjoy life.

At this moment, we had nothing more than a Dream, a vision, of what we wanted to do. The learning curve, of how do you make this dream a reality, was awesome, but unknown to us at the time of our dream. We did have some organizational skills, and a lot of faith. As we have
