Prologue
Son, I’ve found the perfect mate for you.
Anton looked towards the door of his bedroom, where his father stood bouncing on the balls of his feet, overcome with excitement.
Dad, we discussed this two days ago. I’m not ready for a mate; I also don’t have any desire to become Alpha either.
The gleam in his father’s eye turned from excitement to anger and frustration.
You are wasting your potential and I forbid it.
His father snapped, storming further into the bedroom.
Anton chuckled to himself. Do you hear yourself right now. You cannot forbid me to do anything. I’m not going to mate with her. Hell, I don’t even know her.
Anton argued as his father stood over him. The mating was so that when he took over the pack, the pack would accept him better because of it.
You will or you will leave this pack.
Anton had never seen his father this worked up about anything.
You have no say on whether or not I stay in this pack or not.
The hell I don’t,
his father yelled.
Look, dad, you know I don’t want to be Alpha. If you want it so badly, why don’t you do an Alpha Challenge?
He was sick of being a pawn in his father’s games for his bid to power.
This isn’t about me, it’s about you.
I don’t want to be Alpha, and besides, I’m gay.
He never had planned on tell his father that way, but he needed to make him see that the mating wasn’t going to work.
No son of mine will be gay. You will never mate or be accepted by the pack if you go this route. You will mate the female of my choosing.
Anton stared at his father for a moment before nodding his head. Then we will take this up with the Alpha.

Present
Nicholas shifted back to his human form, the night breeze caressing his bare skin as he pulled on his clothes. Tonight his pack ran as one in a show of solidarity after the latest Hunter attack. He hadn’t run with the pack for very long, even if he was expected to finish the run. Since his brothers had found their mates, he hadn’t been good company. Hell, Nathan had two mates. What the hell were the odds? Nicholas only wanted one, and he didn’t care if it made him sound like a whiny little brat, he couldn’t help but be jealous. He didn’t want to feel bitter, but there was only so much he could take.
Nicholas walked through the clearing until he came to the end of the tree line. Instead of walking inside of his home, he went straight to his car. He needed to get away from pack grounds. He completely ignored Noah’s advice about going out with someone. The only person he would take with him would be his twin Nathan, and he was trying to get away from him. Noah would blow a gasket when he found out he left alone. There wasn’t a particular destination he had in mind, but something pulled him to travel north. Nicholas watched as the pack land grew smaller in his rearview mirror, and he felt his nerves beginning to settle a little. Driving to the main road, he turned left to leave the small town that the Red Moon Pack territory surrounded. When he crossed over the county line that contained Springs, Texas, another car joined him on the road. Nicholas wouldn’t have thought anything suspicious about the other car, but they were following too close.
He sat up straight in the driver’s seat, feeling the danger surrounding him. Pressing down on the gas, he increased his speed. Focused on the car behind him; he didn’t notice the second car until it t-boned him, making his car flip several times. Clutching the steering wheel, he prayed he would make it out of this alive. It wasn’t easy to kill a shifter, but if he were unable to defend himself, whoever ran him off the road would have no problems finding a way to kill him. Thankfully, the car landed upright when it finally stopped rolling.
Breathing heavily, his body pumping with adrenaline, he carefully assessed his body to make sure he hadn't broken anything. The airbag in his car had deployed, blocking his view. He needed to get out of the car and face his would-be attackers on even ground. Pushing the airbag out of the way with shaky hands, he fumbled to remove his seatbelt. Just as it came free, he heard the driver’s side window shatter and felt a searing pain in his left shoulder, immediately followed by another in his right. The last thing he saw before passing out was a bald man walking towards him with a shit-eating grin splitting his face.
Chapter One
Anton bolted upright in his bed, grabbing his heart as he searched wildly around his room. For the past week, he had been waking up this way, overwhelmed with sorrow and pain. The sun shined brightly through his window, letting him know that he had slept through the night before waking. Occasionally he woke during the middle of the evening, ready to come out of his skin because of the feelings coursing through his body. Those nights, he was unable to calm his mind enough to go back to sleep. There wasn’t any rhyme or reason for what he was feeling, but when he woke up, he had an uncontrollable urge to leave his home and head south.
Throwing the covers back, he padded naked into the bathroom. He needed
