    Chapter One

I’VE BEEN AROUND THE WORLD MORE TIMES THAN I CAN COUNT. Dana and I sang along with the car’s radio.

I’m torn and shredded, and can’t figure out where I am, without you. We put an extra trill on that final you, but still, the car’s sound system didn’t do the song justice.

Your radio kinda sucks, I said as Dana lowered the volume and paid the parking attendant.

Well, isn’t it a good thing we’re nearly at the concert, where the sound system doesn’t suck, and Winter Falls will be live, before our very eyes? Dana said.

Uh, yeah! We’d just driven more than three hours and I was practically hopping with excitement. Dana and I had been waiting for this concert for months. The second that Winter Falls announced their tour, I was online booking tickets. It would’ve cost me a whole paycheck if my mom hadn’t kindly paid for them as a high school graduation present. My best friend Dana and I had been listening to Winter Falls since we were fourteen. We had been friends forever. In addition to being a whole lot of fun, Dana was classically attractive, with her blond hair, curves, and clear blue eyes. I was Dana’s freckly companion. I was a bit bigger-boned than Dana, more sturdily built as my mom would say, with auburn hair, apple-pie cheeks, and a button nose. My solid features might have been a little less eye-catching than those of my best friend, but I was at peace with both the way I looked and my role as her faithful sidekick. In fact, I think my attraction to Winter Falls had a lot to do with the way I viewed myself.

Both the band and I were outsiders. Sure, Winter Falls had grown into one of the biggest rock bands around, but they didn’t start off that way, and I appreciated their roots. Eric Knightwood, the lead singer, was my favorite member of the band. He was so edgy and charismatic that I always imagined that whatever song he sang, he was singing it to me. For me it had been love at first listen. Dana’s favorite was the guitarist, Dayton Smith, who, along with my boy Eric, penned most of their songs.

I kept a lookout for a parking spot. Even though I had thought we’d left ourselves plenty of time, we had gotten here too late, grossly underestimating just how big of an event it was. Every spot was filled, some spots doubled up with motorcycles. I was becoming claustrophobic as we circled higher and higher up the parking structure, without a break. Car after car, no opening, no space.

Dana, I’m kind of freaking out.

Oh, stop, Sarah! We’ll find something. Don’t think about your claustrophobia. Think about Winter Falls! How long have we been trying to go to one of their shows? Ooh, a spot! Dana whipped her car into the narrow spot so fast that I almost got whiplash.

Damn, girl. Who taught you how to drive? I asked, rubbing my neck, knowing what she’d say next.

You did! Come on, I don’t want to miss anything. I read somewhere that sometimes Dayton walks around the stadium and talks to fans.

I obliged and we linked arms, skipping down the six levels of the parking garage, dodging cars and ignoring the fact that we were grown women skipping in public. Finally, we reached the ground floor and walked across the street to the arena.

Dana and I stood in front of the pavilion. Oooh, we should stop for pictures, yeah?

Yeah! I rummaged around in my purse, which held more things than a cross-body bag should. I had makeup for touch-ups, two packs of gum, a full-sized camera for concert pictures, a clutch wallet, my phone, and a bottle of water that I was going to smuggle into the amphitheater so I didn’t have to pay ten dollars for one at the concession stand. I finally felt the familiar rectangle of my phone in my hand and fished it out from under a pile of receipts.

Ever thought of cleaning out that bag of tricks? Dana said.

Sure. I think about it a lot.

Just haven’t done anything about it, right?

Like the rest of my life, I said.

Dana looked around for someone to take our picture. Her favorite method of finding a photographer was to find the most attractive man in her vicinity and ask him to take the picture. She would then collect phone numbers and dates, but seeing as how this was a Winter Falls concert, the only men present were spoken for by wives who needed a night off from their teenage girls. Dana was out of luck. Fortunately, she found a dad herding his daughters, who looked to be about thirteen and ten. She took my phone out of my hands.

DILF, she whispered, before approaching him. She wasn’t wrong. He was very handsome, and his developing gray hair only made him more so. The man nodded, taking my phone into his hands, and Dana waved me over, his daughters scowling at us.

    Chapter Two

THANK YOU! DANA SAID, making sure that she brushed her fingers against the man’s hand as she took back the phone. Dana. Always the flirt. The man blushed, aiming his face away from his daughters. Then he turned and walked away, glancing back at us as he entered the arena.

I took a deep breath, taking in the scene. The whole place was busy, buzzing with excitement. I felt so right in that moment, being there with my best friend, looking as gorgeous as I got, both of us ready for whatever the night held.

Dana, do you have the tickets? I asked, my voice squeaking with excitement. I wanted to get in there and share the excited energy with the thousands of other fans who had shown up. But something was wrong. I could tell by the shocked look in Dana’s eyes.

"What do you mean me? You have the tickets!"

What are you talking about? My heart stopped and I began to feel sick.

You have the tickets in your bag, right? I reminded you to make sure you got them off the counter!

"No. You told me you picked them up off the counter!" I tried to keep my voice from raising any more than it already had. I didn’t want to cause a scene, but inside I was flipping
