Crystal Dawn

When she’s not out hunting rogue vampires and werewolves, you can find Crystal Dawn out exploring the galaxy. She can do it all without ever leaving her computer. She kicks ass, takes names, and puts it all down for the enjoyment of her readers. At least that’s what I think she told me. Writing came as a natural outlet for her overly creative mind. She has always told stories and even written some but publishing books didn't start until 2012 with The Rebirth, was the first of the Planet Amazon books. Crystal has also been lucky to have some wonderful beta readers who keep her on track and help inspire her.Secretly, she crushes on all her sexy heroes because all her stories end happily. That is one of the things that makes writing such a joy. Knowing that it makes her reader's day a little brighter. Not that she doesn't read sad books sometimes. While still in school, she read Where the Red Fern Grows and cried like a baby. It was a wonderful book and sometimes a bit of sadness has to be put in books because that's part of life. While she reads all kinds of books at some time or another, PNR and SFR, which she writes is what she reads the most for pleasure. When she started writing, she decided on going Indie after the first two books because an author has more control. She believes Indie will compete well and continues to grow. The need to give pleasure to her readers keeps her going and she sees a long career ahead. Growing up mostly in the NW Arkansas area, it has given her a good place to set some stories and many of her characters come from there or nearby SW Missouri. The start of her stories is the easy part. Finishing them is a little harder when all the stories are in there trying to get out. She loves reading, chocolate, fine sweet wine, and traveling among a large list of pursuits. Her favorite people, after her family and close friends, are her readers who she says are some of the most wonderful people in this galaxy and the next.

    Chapter 1

    Life Changes

Sir, could you please get out of the pool and cover up? Lucille requested. This job already was turning out to be more trouble than it was worth.

Why, Darlin’, we’re just having a little fun. Why don’t you strip down and join us? the guest asked.

It was fall and the business at the fruit stand she ran on the highway had slowed down, a lot. She had taken this job as a matter of survival. Two days a week she was the nightshift desk clerk at the Come Again Inn in lovely Eureka Springs. Unfortunately, since it was one of the cheapest places in town to stay, the guests were often partiers with no sense of responsibility. Right now, the pool was full of a group of guests, which wasn’t the problem. The problem was that they were totally drunk and naked to boot. A church group, which was also staying at the hotel, had complained. It wasn’t the only thing they had complained about, there had been a constant stream of complaints from the group leader. This complaint, however, was legitimate since there were children about.

The guest she was talking to, tried to pull her into the pool instead of getting out like she’d requested. Someone yelling pulled his and her attention to the deep end where it appeared one of the group was drowning. Lucille was hit with shock and then fear, which gave her added strength. She pulled loose and ran to the deep end where she jumped in and swam to the drowning woman. Using the skills she had learned when she had gone with her son who had earned badges in Boy Scouts for swimming and first aid, she pulled the woman up so her head was out of the water.

The woman was unconscious, time was of the essence. She positioned her to where she was on her back and she hooked her arm under her neck. Now she swam to the shallow end pulling the woman behind her, and then getting her up the stairs the best she could. None of the group was in any condition to assist her, so once she got her up the steps, she laid her flat on her back. She ran to the first aid station to get a CPR mask that would assist with mouth to mouth resuscitation. Now she applied what she had learned. Relief spread through her when the woman coughed and began spitting out water. Apparently, the close call of one of their own had sobered them up, slightly, and they began to disperse. When the woman felt better, she began to cry, and her man took her back to their room.

Lucille dripped with every step and her shoes squished as she walked. She had a change of clothes with her, but no extra shoes. Since they did laundry in house, she went there and changed her clothes and put them in the washer. Tossing her tennis shoes in with it, she would be barefoot until it was done. Now she went back to the front desk, where she had messages waiting for her. To hell with it, she went and got herself a cup of coffee to calm her nerves before she checked the messages. One was for a wakeup call, the other to cancel a reservation. At least they were easy to deal with.

Her days were Sunday and Monday, and her hours should be from 1 am to 9 am but the dayshift desk clerk was almost always late and sometimes a no show. She was the boss, who was also the owner’s young wife, and he was happy with any work he got out of her. He was a tired old man with health problems that had dumped his wife of forty-five years for a woman a third his age. That wouldn’t bother Lucille, but the new wife was a piranha, she was clearly just after his money and had no love for him at all. It didn’t matter, it was none of her business. Lucille had found the job through Ariel who seemed to know everyone and anyone.

The phone rang and she answered it. Room 230 wanted towels and toilet paper. They must be using the towels for some unknown purpose and eating the damn toilet paper. She went to the supply room and got a pile of towels and three rolls of toilet paper. When she dropped it off, they seemed happy to see it and she noticed they had six people in the small room that had two double beds. That had to be a tight fit. She was sure the owner was sticking it to them. He was a tight wad and five years later, he still complained about having to pay his wife anything in the divorce, even though she had worked in the hotel the whole time they were married, and the grapevine said she’d worked much harder than he had.

When Lucille worked here, she was a girl Friday. Being the only one here meant she handled everything regardless of what it was. There were phone calls, setting up the small continental breakfast at the end of the shift, housekeeping, and dealing with problems like naked drunks. Lucille also monitored the camera screens. At least the pool was empty, all the naked revelers had gone to their rooms. She was thankful for that.

The rest if the night was slow if compared to the first half. The tasks she needed to do came at a steady pace, but there were no more emergences. At the end of her shift, she had the breakfast out and monitored it as she handled checkouts. It was good to keep busy, it made the time go faster but sometimes guests got irritated when items on the bar ran out or they had to wait to check out. When she finally looked up at the clock, it was ten and her replacement hadn’t shown up or called in to say if, or when she’d be there.

Lucille called the owner. He picked the phone up and she heard odd sounds. Was he crying? Hello, Mr. Sands?

    She left me. He cried.

I’m sorry about that. It explains why she’s not here right now. Do you have someone to call in to take my place? Lucille was uncomfortable with emotional people especially ones that were practically strangers. Nothing comforting that she could say came to mind, so she wanted to keep things professional.

I loved that woman. He said and he hiccupped.

She had no clue how to comfort this emotionally disturbed man. Did you say you had someone who could take my place?

I will come take your place at noon. Maybe I’ll pull myself together by then. Do you think she might come back? He asked his voice trembling.

Your wife and I aren’t friends, so I’ve no clue what she might do. Lucille said honestly. I’ll see you at noon. She hung up before he found something else to ask her about. There was no way she would tell him she hadn’t liked his predatory young wife, but that was true. The woman was lazy, selfish, and greedy. If she had left, either she had found a richer man, or her lawyer had advised her she had been married long enough to get a settlement from the mister.

Lucille was more than ready to leave when her boss finally made it in at three. She knew he wouldn’t be on time and had even worried he wouldn’t make it in at all. Glad to see you. Lucille said as she took in his rough appearance. He would probably scare guests away.

I was wondering if you would want to work more days. He hurriedly added, Just for a little while until I hire someone else.

The added money would come in handy, but she had plenty of work at home finishing up the rooms she would be renting out. What the hell, who needed sleep anyway? What were you needing?

Every night for the next two weeks, then you can go back to your original schedule.

Lucille had never worked the original schedule because he called her in often and she had to work double shifts much of the time when his wife didn’t show up. The man looked pitiful, and his eyes bugged out. She suspected he was trying to do the puppy dog eyes her kids had used on her when they were little. It wasn’t a good look on an eighty-year-old man who had obviously been crying recently and desperately needed a bath.

Alright. She replied and now she just wanted out of here. Gathering up her purse and jacket, she hurried out before he could find a reason to delay her. Thirty minutes later she was home, but she couldn’t remember the trip at all. It was probably, because she had thought about the work that was waiting at home for her. Today, if she worked hard, she would finish the first bedroom, and she would be able to take on her first boarder from her cousin, Cassandra.

Cassandra took in injured military veterans and helped rehabilitate them. Once they were in a job, they had to find another place to live, to make room for the next person that needed to heal, and train to find a new job. There was a waiting list and Cassandra had mentioned she needed a place they could go from there, to continue their healing, and decide what their next step would be. That place would be her home, at least for a few of them. That is if she ever got the work done. Her house was big, bigger than Cassandra’s, but she wanted to give her tenants a mini studio apartment. When her house was remodeled, she would be able to have four tenants, and each would have a bedroom/living room with a small bathroom of their own and a kitchenette. One of the units was almost done. All that was left was putting in the sink and shelving for the kitchenette.

Her cousin had three of her soldiers, the ones done with the main therapy they’d come for, looking for a place of their own that was close enough they could still visit Cassandra’s place to continue maintenance therapy. Lucille’s house was perfect, and she needed the income. Her only hope was that the one she helped first wouldn’t be Grey. That man/wolf watched her with heated eyes every time she came around. She had too much pride to tell Cassandra she didn’t want him to live here, but not so much that she wouldn’t hope and pray that it would be someone else.

After her ex-husband had left her, she had no interest in romance and she was leery of wolves knowing only the basics about
