The Pict named Tawn, whose blue markings resemble a falcon in flight, has been banished from his brethren. He who rides another man cannot ensure the procreation of the clan.

On his journey from Scotland's east coast, he meets a cheeky stranger and his fearful pet. Drawn to this young man Finn in spite of his reservations, he finds his new companion challenging his strong beliefs…and his Alpha nature.

Tawn, torn with indecision, appeals to his spirit-guide and discovers a secret that may change not only his future, but even that of his people.

    Foreword

This story is based very loosely on historical annals tracing events in the 8th century A.D., where Nechtan is mentioned as a king of the Picts ca. 706 with a relative (a king-brother?) named Drest. He may have been banished—for whatever reason—and then returned to strip power from his brother and become a king in his own right.

The Dalriata of this story is an ancient name for the northeastern tip of modern Ireland (Ulster) and part of western Scotland.

The blue tattoos of the Picts were first recorded by astonished Romans, and modern research has shown they may have been clan marks applied with needle-pricking and then rubbed in with woad paste.
