How to Forget the Past - Dr. Pamela Parker

Hope

Introduction

What person have you ever known who did not have life experiences they wish they could forget? You likely have a few that are coming to mind right now which is why you’re reading this book!

Having lived a life that reads like a television soap opera, especially before accepting Jesus as my Savior, I was a seriously dysfunctional, emotional cripple. As I learned that Jesus came to heal the broken-hearted I was determined to have that promise become a reality in my life. (Isaiah 61:1-3)

Through that journey, one of the most valuable things I learned came as a result of asking how to do what the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 3:13-14 (KJV) Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Perhaps you’ve been fortunate enough to evade such dramatic experiences, but that does not minimize the pain and distress you may still carry from incidents within your own life. Who hasn’t experienced the pain and distraction caused by a splinter? It’s no broken leg, but it requires attention none the less. So too anything that has wounded us results in the need for healing.

People quick to quote Paul’s words from Philippians to hurting people, telling them to just forget what is behind, without telling them how to do it only wound them further.

Forgetting is a process, not an event. It requires time. There are no short cuts.

Equipping ourselves to forget the past also prepares us for the future. We may have additional experiences as we live out our lives wherein
