Introduction
I am not a very good cook, but I can follow a recipe. Sometimes what I make tastes good, sometimes it does not. Like most people, I do not like investing a lot of time preparing a meal that does not taste good and leaves me unsatisfied.
But I like soup.
It does not much simpler than opening the can, finding a clean pot, turning on th e stove and waiting until it is warm enough to eat. Low risk, high reward and ever so predictable - who could ask for anything more.
I also like metaphors. As a project manager and software implementation consultant, I have found the best ways to communicate with clients, project team members and business partners is through metaphors. Taking a new or a complex idea and relating it something that people can identify with , increases understanding and reduces the fear of the unknown through familiarization. Metaphors make the complex simple. In addition, breaking down a complex process into a series of steps, like a recipe, provides an easy to follow guide that serves as a repeatable process for solving business problems.
So that is what this book is: it is a series of step by step articles and essays (a.k.a. recipes) that outline the steps involved in resolving a variety of situations that you may encounter on your project. Some of the recipes involve metaphors, others do not.
If you are looking for a complicated step by step approach for planning and managing projects containing charts, graphs, pictures and complex diagrams, then this is not the book for you. If you are looking for an easy to read book that provides tips and techniques in easily relatable, digestible nuggets ; then you are in the right place.
So, come on in and sit down. Soup's on!

Soup: The Perfect Metaphor for Project Management
I do not like investing a lot of time preparing a meal that does not taste good and leaves me unsatisfied. Sound familiar? Sounds like what an executive may say when an important project fails to meet its objectives. A failed project or a project that does not live up to expectations leaves a foul taste in your mouth and an unsatisfied feeling similar to a bad meal. And after the check has been
