Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte (1820 -1849) is a classic novel based on the life of working as a governess. It is set in the Victorian era and follows the story of Agnes, the daughter of a minister who finds employment by working as a governess due her family's financial difficulties. She is faced with challenging issues which young women at the time were faced with whilst working as a governess. The novel was first published in 1847 and republished in 1850. It was considered to be a reflection of the authors own life experiences whilst working for five years as a governess.
