    Entwined - Julia Crane

    Tulupea

Over six months has passed since my father returned as the King of the faery realm. I could still scarcely believe he was alive, even if his true form was now one of a demon.

And yet somehow my parents were making it work, which gave me hope for my relationship with Michael, even though he’s a human and I’m a princess.

Mother. Nixie’s musical voice cut through my mind, interrupting my thoughts.

Smiling, I turned from the window. It still struck me as unbelievable … I was a mother to halflings. They’d grown so much, now they appeared to be teenagers. My heart constricted at the thought of their rate of growth; we still had no idea if they would live human lifetimes or that of the fae. Either way, I was going to enjoy every moment of it.

Nixie was gorgeous, I often found myself wanting to take her into the faery realm, so she could live the life that was intended for my offsprings. But that was not her fate. We’d managed to keep the true identities of the halflings a secret. Everyone believed them to be fae from another realm who’d simply placed a glamour over themselves to accent the fae elements and downplay the human. There was such a mixture of creatures on Earth, it was hard to get a raised eyebrow out of anyone these days.

The faery realm believed the experiment of merging human and fae had failed. My mother told them, one after one they’d died—this was the truth, we lost so many—and she left it at that. Because it was a partial truth no one questioned or pressed her any further on the issue, thankfully. I think everyone was so startled to have the king back that something as insignificant as an experiment did not hold much interest to them. For this I was grateful. To say the children were safe on Earth and thriving would be an understatement. They’re beyond our wildest expectations. It still blew me away that they were so powerful. Even more powerful than my mother and I. Sometimes I still worried they would be persecuted for who they were.

However, at this point I’m not sure it would even matter if they figured out about the halflings; not with my mother back as the Queen of the realm. Whatever she commanded was the law.

Maybe I should plead with her to have the halflings accepted into the realm?

Mother, are you paying attention? Nixie asked, frowning at me.

I shook my head, bringing me back to reality. I’m sorry, what were you saying?

She gave me a skeptical gaze while making a face. I was just wondering if you wanted to go on a walk with me to check on the villagers, there’s someone I’d like you to meet.

Of course, where are the others? I raised a brow but reached for my cloak off the back of the chair. It was starting to get chilly. This was something I was still not used to; in our realm it was eternally spring.

She gave a slight shrug with an impish smile.

Which usually meant she was up to something.

We made our way out of the castle into the bright morning light. I pulled the cloak tighter as the crisp air surrounded me. There were a few people milling around, and as we passed through, we waved and smiled. Who’s this person you wish me to meet?

    You’ll see. She grinned.

My soul soars at the sight of this place. My hand swept out, indicating the surrounding area. It’s grown so prosperous in such a short time period.

It was nice to see the village bustling. The sweet smell of fresh bread hung in the air as we ambled along the cobblestone pathway. Humans and creatures alike were working side-by-side. The fear literally vanished overnight. I wasn’t quite sure what caused it but if I had to guess, the halflings should be given credit. The population was still small but little by little more found their way from faraway lands. I guess word was spreading that this was the place to be.

Despite myself, I couldn’t help but wonder if it would last. I know I shouldn’t think this way but it seemed too good to be true.

I should be more optimistic, maybe all the generations of destruction were finally balanced out and Earth would be able to thrive once again. It certainly felt different. The energy was lighter, as if the density had been lifted, or something. It was hard to put into words.

Will the queen be returning anytime soon? I feel like it’s been ages since we’ve seen her, Nixie asked, glancing around as if she were looking for something or someone and not really into the conversation.

I hope so. Maybe this week. Things seem to have settled down in the realm, perhaps she can finally sneak away.

I miss Demitrious. She paused. We keep in touch through mental imagery, but I miss his presence.

I didn’t know they had kept in touch such a way. These children were always full of surprises. I haven’t heard from him much, how is he?

One narrow shoulder lifted and fell. As you know it’s hard for him to hold his form there for extended periods of time but he seems to have adapted quite well. I wish he could be in his true form and be with the queen. I really don’t understand why there has to be so much division amongst beings. That’s what did Earth in to begin with, it’s like no one will ever truly understand that we are all equal. We come from the same source. If they could see each other the way we see them, they wouldn’t be frightened by differences on the outside.

Even though I agreed with her it was just not the way the world worked. Maybe someday, I said wistfully. It was much the same with myself and Michael; the realm would never agree to a merger between the two of us. Oh well, it didn’t really matter. As long as I stayed on Earth I was allowed to be true to my heart and my heart was with him. Eventually there would come a time when I would have to return to the faerie realm and take my place on the throne, but hopefully that wouldn’t be for a very long time.

Oh there he is! Nixie sighed, her footsteps quickening.

I glanced up to see who she was talking about and I was surprised to see a very handsome young man. I could tell he wasn’t quite human, but I wasn’t sure what he was. My eyes darted to Nixie and I was stunned to see her face flushed and her eyes practically glowing.

Clearly she liked this boy, I don’t know why it took me by surprise. I guess I wasn’t ready for teenage romance. From the way he was staring back at her it was obvious the feelings were mutual. Michael was not going to like this, I thought, trying to suppress a grin.

Mother, I’d like you to meet Sagor.

As I reached my hand out to him, he dropped to his knee and lowered his head. It had been a while since I’d been greeted in such a way, as if he were a fae, but I knew that wasn’t true. Please rise, there is no need for that here. Where do you come from, Sagor?

Far from here, the star system Pegasus.

My brow rose. The Pegasi were a strong race, their lineage was of the gods, such as Zeus. What brings you to Earth?

"Word has spread to our star system that Earth’s now a haven of sorts, that Gaia is welcoming all beings as long as they live in accord
