    Ah, good. You’re waking up.

    The last thing Kaliope remembered was answering her dressing room door and seeing a shadow-cloaked man. She tried to move only to find her arms bound behind her. She willed open her heavy lids but didn’t recognize her surroundings. This wasn’t the opera house.

    I was beginning to think I used too much ether.

    She turned her head toward the sound, finding the speaker behind a grated door. She was in a jail cell. She tried to sit up, but her prone position on the floor along with her bound hands and tight corset made it impossible. She settled for rolling onto her side. She blew a wayward copper curl out of her eyes.

    Ether? As the fog lifted from her mind, she remembered the man pouncing on her and shoving a cloth in her face the moment she’d opened her door.

    Where am I? she croaked. Kali took in the details of her surroundings, the sway of the vessel, and the salty sea air. She was in the hull of a ship.

    Her captor snorted in answer to her question. He rattled a ring full of keys as he searched for the correct one. She cringed at the sound of the tumblers clanking in the lock. The door swung open with a screech and a hiss.

    He hauled her to her feet by grabbing her elbow. She was still in her opera garb, the ridiculous bustle of the bronze gown rustled with every movement. She hoped she didn’t fall out
