It was time for death to visit again.
Already praying for the heathen souls O’Connell?
Jones, I am already praying for yours.
I said.
And how is that going for you?
I fiddled with my hat and stretched my tense back muscles, Don’t think God is listening.
He snorted a quick laugh and spat his tobacco towards the ground. He was a large man. Broad shoulders, tall as a horse. God stopped listening a long time ago.
I shook my head, God did not stop listening Jones. He just decided to ignore some prayers.
What about your soul?
Afraid not much to be saved there. I’ll be betting on grace instead,
I said.
I always knew men of the cloth were the biggest imposters.
Jones said.
I smiled but decided to leave the conversation. Jones was one of the few soldiers I actually liked. He joined the militia the day after he buried what was left of his family, burned to death inside their frontier home.
My story had a similar origin and it was not hard to understand why men like him was here. And Jones was right. The first thing you resign to yourself when you decide to dedicate your life to the church was that you were the biggest imposter. For who was I supposed to pray? The vicious killers riding under the banner of God and justice and liberty or the barbaric heathen people I were supposed to minister? I hated the thought. It made me question the fabric of my faith. It all went with the cross and everyday it became harder to believe in goodness, love and redemption when shaded by the shadow of death. Death and Life. Liberty and Mercy. God and Satan.
