I was very close to both of my parents who were my best friends, and I have lost count of the number of happy times we shared, and all of the creativity and laughter. Like my beloved father Joe, my mother Margaret was so special, and my total inspiration. I would therefore like to dedicate this book to their memory.

Introduction
Following the dramatic events surrounding the cascade, the whole world was suddenly thrown into turmoil. It heralded a period of great change, as people began to realise just how close they had come to disaster.
With everyone still reeling from that, the media had managed to acquire enough information to force the United Nations into releasing a report confirming contact with at least one alien species!
People were now glued to the news reports, in a state of total bewilderment. Civil unrest and panic buying quickly spread around the globe, and it was clear that something had to be done before the situation got completely out of control.
Contact had now officially been made with alien life forms, and a first contact meeting was hastily arranged. This provoked quite a reaction, as no one knew for certain what these aliens would be like…
One
The stars seemed somehow different now and not nearly so far away, as they twinkled in the night’s sky. Even the moon shone down more brightly than usual, with tonight’s sky being particularly clear. It almost felt like daylight, as the weather conditions conspired to produce almost perfect visibility. It was particularly mild too, with a soft gentle breeze that brought a pleasant freshness to the air.
The recent plasma storm had cleansed the outer atmosphere, and ironically also reduced the levels of pollution. Many scientists hailed it as nothing short of an environmental miracle, although for most people, they were more concerned with the revelations coming form the United Nations. What had set out as a would-be spaceman’s dream had turned into a calamity of global proportions, and then just as disaster was about to strike the unimaginable had actually happened - proof that alien life existed!
Catherine Cook, or Cookie as she was know, shivered with excitement as she looked up at the sky wondering how many life forms existed on planets circling the countless stars. All her life she had been a believer, and although she had also faced ridicule just like John Appleby, hopefully one day she could realise her dream.
Cookie did not want to fly in a spaceship, as all of her life she had the desire to pilot a conventional aircraft. It was fair to say that she was plane mad, and even as a little girl she had rejected her dolls to play with her brother’s model aircraft. Looking up enviously at an aircraft in the distance, all she wanted was to learn how to fly, and somehow one day, she knew that she was going to achieve her ambition. However, it looked a remote possibility at the moment, owing to a certain Instructor!
Cadet Cook!
Yes Sir!
She turned to see the chef standing behind her.
I thought I told you to clean up around here!
Her face flushed, as he pointed to the empty boxes, and bits of food lying about on the floor.
Well!
He did not look very pleased, so she grabbed the brush and started sweeping up the rubbish that was lying around her feet.
I’ve got another job for you when you’ve finished up here!
He watched her for a few seconds, before returning to the kitchens. She kept on sweeping until he was out of sight, and then stopped to look back up at the sky again.
Cookie had only been in the Royal Air Force for a matter of weeks, and had already been forced into doing more than one extra duty. This time she had been detailed to the kitchens, after yet another misdemeanour. This was the second charge that she had been placed on in less than a week, and her whole career now hung by the proverbial thread. One more mistake and it could all be over!
Still daydreaming she started sweeping again, moving the rubbish into a pile. It was hard work as bits of cabbage leaf kept getting tangled up in the bristles, and some of the potato peelings had got wedged between gaps in the concrete. There were also several empty tins, which she was just about to throw into one of the large bins, when she heard a lot of shouting in the distance.
Instinctively she climbed up onto an upturned bucket, peering over the wall at the large crowd of people that had gathered by the main gate. Their numbers were increasing all of the time, and they had already begun to stretch right along the perimeter fence.
Cookie could almost see the ripples of excitement spreading out across the English countryside, and the air was positively buzzing with excitement, as everyone looked up trying to be the first to catch a glimpse of whatever they were waiting for.
It was rumoured that tonight was going to herald the first official contact between the human race, and those who supposedly lived out there in the Milky Way Galaxy.
If this was really going to be the place of official first
