      Want me to drive for awhile? Shay asked.

      Ella had been dodging cars and trucks on the highway for over two hours. Neither she nor Shay had much to say to each other after watching Luke and Dave get eaten alive. Worse than watching them be attacked was the feeling of being totally useless. Ella cursed herself mentally over and over again for not trying to stop those zoms.

      Maybe Shay was right, though. Maybe they didn’t stand a chance against the infected. But at least they could’ve tried to rescue Luke and Dave.

      No, that’s okay, Ella replied, even though her eyelids felt heavy. Part of her was afraid that if they stopped, a zom would appear from behind a vehicle, or a tree, and ambush them.

      Pull yourself together.

      Shay’s gaze remained fixed straight ahead. All she could think about was how they left Luke and Dave to be eaten. She closed her eyes, unable to delete the memory from her mind. No matter how hard she tried to think of something else—what would happen when they reached Atlanta, if her family was okay, whether or not the rest of the world had gone to hell in a hand-basket—her brain pushed the images of Luke and Dave to the forefront of her thoughts.

      She opened her eyes, just in time for her to catch a glimpse of the green sign
