Not so very long ago, a storyteller was born, one might even say, a fantasy weaver (oooh, I like that – kinda rolls off the tongue, dontcha think?). Hand in hand with her most trusted friend, an imaginary boy named Charlie (awww, I miss Charlie), she wove many a tale of aliens and evil clones who impersonated her elder brothers (for certainly she wasn't actually related to those wretched boys who teased and taunted her mercilessly) while growing up in Ontario, Canada. Even when Charlie faded away, she continued to live in her own fantasy world, telling her stories to her stuffed animals, and finally writing them down when she was old enough to know how...

The Emerald Dragon of Nital - Vik Walker

    Chapter One

    Flying

Nathan lifted his face to the sun, feeling the warm breeze blowing past him.

This is awesome! he thought, turning to look back at his tail.

    Tail? What the heck?

Nathan stopped in midair to take a good look at himself. Sure enough, there was a tail! And scales, and wings, and…

Holy cow! I’m a dragon! Sweet!

Nathan looked around at the blue skies and fluffy white clouds. Not only was he a dragon, he was flying.

Sweet, he said again, laughing and flapping his wings to spin around in a circle in the air. He always figured that flying must be cool, and envied the dragons for being able to, but this was even more awesome than he could ever have imagined.

He flapped his wings harder, swooping down so fast the wind just whipped across his skin, or should he say scales? Then he swooped back up again and hovered, just hanging there in the air.

Looking down, seeing how high up he was, he started to get a little dizzy.

Whoa… He was really high up!

Nathan took a deep breath and started flapping his wings again. He flew straight ahead, and then rolled over onto his back. He soared along, feeling the warm sun on his belly as he glided through the air. It was the most amazing thing, just flying along like this.

Then suddenly it stopped. He froze in midair as this horrible cold feeling came over him. He looked up, thinking maybe the sun had gone behind a cloud. Nope, still shining bright. But Nathan was cold. Very, very cold. He shivered and tried to hug himself, but his arms were too short.

What’s happening? he thought, getting worried.

Then he got really scared as it started to feel as though the air was being sucked out of his lungs. Trying to gasp for air, he felt himself begin to fall.

Help, he tried to shout, but nothing came out, not even a squeak.

He started spinning as he fell. Round and round as the ground rushed towards him faster and faster. He tried to flap his wings, but nothing happened. He wasn’t just cold, he was frozen. He couldn’t move, couldn’t breath, couldn’t even call out for help. His gut clenched in terror.

I’m going to die. The thought made him want to cry, but he couldn’t even do that.

He squeezed his eyes shut, not wanting to watch when he went ‘splat’. Then, just a moment before he hit the ground, he stopped. Just suddenly stopped falling. He slowly opened one eye, then the other. He wasn’t dead! He wanted to puff out a breath in relief, but still couldn’t breathe.

Slowly, he felt his body lower to the ground. He lay there, still trying to breath, still feeling so cold, when he saw the feet walk into his line of sight. He would have raised his head to look at the person coming towards him, but still couldn’t move. Couldn’t even look up.

Hello, he heard a voice say, and felt a nasty shiver run down his spine. He recognized that voice.

Then the person stopped just in front of him and bent down so that Nathan could see his face…

    Oh no…

Nathan woke with a start, still feeling his heart beating in overdrive.

Levithius, he whispered, still feeling the terror of the dream.

    Yes?

Nathan heard the voice coming from the corner of his room and nearly fell out of bed, he was so startled.

What are you doing here? he spat out the question at Levithius, who sat in a chair by his bedroom window.

Levithius laughed, that horrible slimy laugh that Nathan remembered from the first time they had met, and Nathan felt a shiver run up his spine. Levithius, the Dragon Slayer who had tried to kill him just a couple months ago, was in his house. Had, in fact, snuck into his bedroom while he was sleeping. This was so not cool!

Just paying a visit to a dear friend, Levithius snarled at Nathan sarcastically.

We are not friends, Nathan responded icily.

Oh, but we could be, Levithius said. In fact, I think we could be very good friends.

We could never be friends, Nathan replied, the tone of his voice clearly letting Levithius know what he thought of that idea.

Oh, don’t be so sure. You haven’t even heard my proposal.

I don’t care what you have to say, Nathan told him. Get out of my room, and don’t come back.

Levithius laughed that slimy laugh again. Don’t worry, I’ll be leaving soon. But first we have a little business to discuss.

I have nothing to say to you, Nathan assured him with a huff.

    Really? Nothing at all?

Nathan rolled his eyes at him.

So, you enjoyed your little flying lesson, did you? Levithius sneered knowingly.

    What…? How…? You…? Nathan sputtered.

Oh yes, I thought you might enjoy that. Levithius laughed as he said this.

You did that? Nathan asked in horror. You made me fly, then… He couldn’t even finish the sentence as he remembered suddenly falling like that.

Well, in a sense, Levithius leaned forward in the chair, putting his fingers together and spreading them in front of his face as he continued. Actually, what I did was share a little experience with you while your unconscious mind was open.

Nathan squinted his eyes at Levithius suspiciously. What do you mean?

Did you know, Levithius went on, that when you snatch a dragon’s magic, you take his memories and experiences as well?

    Nathan’s eyes widened in horror.

Oh yes, Levithius smiled seeing the unspoken question in Nathan’s eyes. That was the last memory of a dragon whose magic belongs to me now.

Nathan gasped as the reality of what Levithius was saying sank in. That horrible feeling of falling, of freezing, of gasping for breath had been real. Some poor dragon had actually felt that terror as he died like that with Levithius stealing his magic from him.

Don’t worry, Levithius sneered maliciously. It wasn’t your precious little Silver Dragon.

Nathan had been thinking of the baby dragon he and his friend Pinnip had hatched on Ocard Sitnom last Christmas.

It was a nasty hulking Blood Dragon who sacrificed his life for the greater good. Levithius went on to say.

What are you talking about? What ‘greater good’? Nathan demanded.

Poor little Nathan. You’ve been brainwashed by those infuriating Good Nitali. Dragons are not the wonderful creatures that you have been led to believe.

I don’t believe you. You’re Evil, Nathan said.

Oh, please. ‘Good’ and ‘Evil’ are just words. They are nothing but the names of the two major groups in Nital, no more. You Sinimoh only think ‘Evil’ is a bad thing because the ‘Good’ won the war so long ago. Had we won, you would all think that ‘Evil’ was a wonderful word and that ‘Good’ was the bad word.

Whatever, Nathan snorted. He, of all people, knew just how BAD Levithius was!

Levithius ignored this and continued as if Nathan hadn’t spoken.

Dragon’s, on the other hand, are truly what you Sinimoh consider to be evil. They are the plague of Nital, preying on anyone and everything they come across. They have no feelings, and could care less who they hurt, or who they kill. Without Dragon Slayers, like me, their numbers would multiply to the point where no Nitali would be safe. We help the people of Nital.

I don’t believe you, Nathan said again, his eyes narrowing at Levithius.

No, of course not, Levithius spat back angrily. You’ve been brainwashed by that bumbling fool Gimblet.

Shut up, Nathan shouted at him. Gimblet was Nathan’s friend. Gimblet was the old Troll who owned the strange store near Nathan’s house that Nathan had always
