About this ebook

Ontological Ideas About the Holy Spirit in the Early Church by Robert Alan King is a booklet with over 4,600 words. This book will focus on the ontological ideas about the Spirit that we can identify among five of the most prominent early church fathers following the apostolic age, including Ignatius, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Origen. King discusses how they agree on many basic theological aspects about God in three persons, but that they also maintain some differences, including the relationship of the Spirit within the Trinity. Though the focus is primarily on their ontological dimensions of the Spirit in the Godhead, this requires some exploration into the economic activities of the Spirit in order to express and describe his existence as a distinct person. It also demands some discussion regarding the Father and the Son in order to further define the Spirit. Robert Alan King is an ordained minister through Calvary Chapel.

    Introduction

Though orthodox theology asserts that the Holy Spirit is one of the three co-equal personal distinctions within the Trinity, efforts to define the Holy Spirit and his relationship to the Father and the Son led to some ideas among many of the early church fathers that were not necessarily what we would consider orthodox. This book will focus on the ontological ideas about the Spirit that we can identify among many of the most prominent early church fathers following the apostolic age, beginning first with Ignatius and ending with Origen. It will show that the general consensus of opinion among them held that the Holy Spirit was in fact a distinct person united with two other distinct persons as one God in nature and substance.

Though our focus is primarily on the ontological dimensions of the Spirit in the Godhead, this will require some exploration into the economic activities of the Spirit in order to express and define his existence as a distinct person. It will also demand some discussion regarding the Father and the Son in order to further define the Spirit. We will now examine the primary ontological ideas about the Spirit in Ignatius, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Origen. We will find that though they agreed on many basic theological aspects about God in three persons, they also
