A special thanks goes out to the entire Starbucks Brier Creek crew. Now that the weather has turned you’ll have to reserve me my seat in the comfy chair right inside the doorway.
I would also like to thank my copy-editor, A.D. Reed. Not only does he correct my grammar and punctuation, but he provides great insight in helping me become a better writer.
Forward
When I first set off on this journey to put pen to paper almost one year ago, I found a home in my own personal brand of prose. My Narratives works were where I felt most comfortable and most at ease. Thoughts quickly morphed into concepts, and the fluidity in moving them to paper happened seamlessly. After finishing up the second Narratives volume, I took a step back and thought, What’s next?
I wasn’t ready to start on a Narratives volume three, so I went back through some old writings I’d done as a teenager and then as a young adult. All of these works were very short stories that I had submitted to independent comic book publishers with the hope of landing a writing credit for a horror or suspense story. None of my submissions were accepted save one, which never made it to print. The only work that ever saw the light of day was a story I’d written for my college literary magazine in 1989.
Once I had pulled out all the old stories and read through them, I dug out some personal journals that predated everything I had written to that point. The earliest of entries went back to 1984, and it was there I discovered a section containing written accounts of dreams I had as a teenager. Taking the trip down memory lane was a lot of fun, and in going back through those old entries, I came up with a new concept. I thought it would be interesting to merge some of my selected dream
entries from my journal with the theme from the work I’d done for my school’s literary magazine. What you hold before you is the end result of that idea.
I wanted to try my hand once again at fiction. The first time around was an abject failure, but with an additional twenty-plus years of life experience, two works of prose under my belt, and a concept that I thought had potential, I felt the time was right to take my shot.
I do hope this is an enjoyable read. I had a lot of fun writing it.
Of course, I would certainly welcome any feedback, positive or negative. My contact information can be found in the section titled About the Author.
Enjoy.

Summer mornings have a unique feel to them. At least in Reese Kessler’s mind, and, to some almost tangible extent his soul, they do.
There’s something about waking to the warm, moist summer air seeping through an open window that gives him a measure of comfort, as if he is being immersed in a warm bath of bliss. No doubt, the fondest memories of his youth are those that took place in the summer months – when the time was all his, and the daylight seemed to last forever, bringing with each day a new adventure or a new experience to share with his friends.
But mostly for Reese, it was about the feel of dawn – the feel of the quiet and calm, and the settling of early morning haze on the many backyard lawns and woods surrounding his neighborhood, the light buzzing and humming of cicadas, and the strong smell of freshly cut grass. At this time of day, there was nothing to either mask or corrupt the senses. He reveled in it, and still does – even when he dreams.
From the darkness, he finds himself lying awake in the bed, in the same room, facing the same opened bedroom window he once recognized as being his twelve-by-fourteen-square-foot sanctuary within his childhood home. Immediately, he gets up and walks towards his window. He can smell that familiar scent of a summer’s dawn, and it brings with it the warm and fuzzy feeling he’d grown to expect from
