About this ebook
First love - coming of age - family - acceptance
When Charlie was eight years old, his mum bought him a microscope for his birthday. Since then, he's known how he wants to spend his life. There have been trials, and challenges, but now - finally - the day is here for him to start college with his lifelong friend Anthony Pace.
Anthony is a red-haired force of nature. He writes poetry about their enemies and eagerly participates in all Charlie's science experiments without understanding a word. Every morning, he waits at the end of their street so they can get the bus together.
But things are changing.
Families are important, and complex. Charlie's mum hasn't been well, and his relationship with Anthony begins to shine like a different star in the sky.
Can everything come together in this explosion of physics and chemicals that Charlie calls life? Will Anthony Pace ever share his poems with the world, and can the Chihuahua, Princess Arabella, ever learn to stop licking?
****
WARNING: includes moderately explicit scenes of intimacy between consenting young adult males.

Chapter One
Charlie Woods had anticipated this day for one thousand and ninety-five days. In some ways, he had been ready almost his whole life.
At first, he and Mum kept tally, but now the day was here and they were, apparently, both too old for such games.
But still, he went to look at the wall-size cork board, with its pictures of famous scientists and Mum’s funny quotes. Charlie knew exactly where to find the thumb prints from when he was seven years old—four centimetres left of Anthony’s lock of hair, and just above a passport picture of them both cross-eyed.
A finger trailed across the edge, traversing all of Anthony’s poems with their loopy writing and exclamation marks. The rough card tickled, causing all those memories to jolt up through his hand and arm until it was too much.
Charlie?
Mum called like she always did, making him realise he was holding his breath. With effort, he lowered his shoulders and gasped with relief.
Coming, Mum. Just getting my bag ready.
He automatically glanced at the checklist, even though he knew that old list off by heart, just like all the lists that had got him through to today: this golden day of reckonings. And anyway, he’d checked his bag yesterday afternoon, and again before going to bed.
Mirrors were always weird, but the last thing he needed was to start the first day of the rest of his life with last night’s dinner on his chin. So, just before leaving his room, he looked.
Nothing about his face ever added up.
All anyone needed was two eyes, a nose and mouth—just enough to fit in and not enough to ever get noticed. But the curly hair defied all logic and always had. It stuck out at every conceivable angle like wayward blonde tentacles waving for attention. When he was five years old, Anthony Pace had called him Boing-Boing, setting in motion a game of intellectual chess that did not seem to be coming to an end anytime soon.
The smile he quickly practised in the mirror looked every bit as strange as always, but as he wasn’t starting a course on catwalk modelling, it was hardly likely to matter.
Come on then, Boing-Boing,
he said wryly to his reflection.
He was holding back the inevitable, but today, it would be all right; even the bacteries wouldn’t be so cruel as to fuck up his first day at college.
He was almost sure of this.
As he jumped down the stairs, four at a time, his heart beat a little faster than normal, but it was just his body preparing for attack, just in case.
It was only when he saw her at the oven toasting bread that he realised his shoulders were way up higher than they should be and his stomach muscles had bunched into iron knots.
Toast all right, love?
she asked, just like she had since he was old enough to beg for gimmicky cereals. Something warm and snuggly ebbed into Charlie’s muscles; he was so pleased to hear that sentence uttered again in that over-bright voice, as if in apology for the day ahead.
That meant she knew it was Monday, and maybe even remembered it was his first day at college.
It’s today, Mum!
he blurted out, knowing he was jumping all over the place now the tension had slipped away.
I know! It’s so exciting, isn’t it? My little boy off to college.
She shook her head affectionately. I hope they know how lucky they are getting my Charlie.
Mum,
he protested, but he was secretly pleased.
Here you are, then. Make sure you eat a lot because those places might not have any food. And if you get lost, don’t panic.
Of course they have food. Why, there’s three cafés and a restaurant onsite. Don’t you remember we went to look in July?
He should have known better by now than to keep asking what she could and couldn’t remember, but he didn’t seem to be able to help it. Every day, he picked and poked at the scab that was Mum’s memory in case it had miraculously healed overnight.
She smiled vaguely but her eyes and thoughts were elsewhere. Her lovely fuzzy hair stood out like the dandelion puffs they used to blow every year to make wishes, but now he really only had the one wish that was far too big for any dandelion seed to carry.
Aren’t you having any toast?
He’d been home the past three months since his last exam, able to make sure she ate regularly. Go on—just one piece.
He started spreading toast with butter, then jam, the way she loved it.
Oh, no, dear, I’m on a diet. Want to stay slim for your dad, don’t I?
The harsh scraping of the knife suddenly seemed too loud. Some days, not saying anything worked, and some days, it didn’t.
Some days nothing worked.
Where is he?
she asked as Charlie accidentally scraped so hard the knife pierced the toast.
He’s not here anymore, Mum, is he?
His voice sounded like a spinning coin coming to an abrupt stop.
"But where’s he
