Bob Moats

Detroit area resident, Bob Moats, has been writing short stories and plays for as long as he can remember. He has lost most of his original stories, typed or handwritten, in the numerous moves he has made from his hometown of Fraser, Michigan to Northern Michigan, to Las Vegas and back to Fraser, where he now lives. Moats became one of the causalities of unemployment a year ago, and had time on his hands to finally pursue a life long dream of writing a full blown crime novel. Thus was born the first book, "Classmate Murders".What followed was a series of seven books starting with "The Classmate Murders" which introduces the main character, Jim Richards, who has to admit he has become a senior citizen, reluctantly. Richards, one day, receives an email from a childhood sweetheart asking for his help, but by the time he reaches her, she has been murdered. His life turns around and he is pulled into numerous murders of women from his high school who he hasn't seen in forty years. Along with a friend of his, Buck, a big, mustached biker, they go off to track down the killer before he can get to one former classmate, Penny Wickens, a TV talk show host who Jim has just fallen for while protecting her. The killer is also murdering the women right out from under police protection, driving homicide detective Will Trapper crazy, and he slowly depends on Jim to help. There's humor, suspense, wild chases across suburban Detroit with cops, classic cars and motorcycle clubs; murder, mayhem, a good amount of romance and a twist ending.Jim and his crime fighters, continue in the other books, traveling to Las Vegas twice, back to Detroit and out to New York to solve murders involving dominatrix; mistresses; Bridezillas; magic and strip clubs.Book titles: Classmate Murders; Vegas Showgirl Murders; Dominatrix Murders; Mistress Murders; Bridezilla Murders; Magic Murders; Strip Club Murders and Made-for-TV Murders.

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

I stood watching the guests milling about, talking. Mary and I had just gotten married and were enjoying the company of our friends and relatives in the rental hall. My captain and his wife drove up from Detroit to join us, which was nice. Plus, he gave Mary and me an extra week off, with pay, to have a honeymoon. The local police detectives in Mary's hometown had all gone back to their duties and their captain was talking to my captain.

I'm a Detroit police detective who was assigned to the Cold Case department about four months ago. Shortly after, I gained a partner who no one else could see, he was a ghost. His name was Wes and he was assigned to me by some higher power to help solve cold cases so we could send the victim's spirits to the hereafter. Shortly after he came, I gained another partner, Detective Mary Cohen, who I worshiped since I first saw her. We grew close and finally now we were married in her hometown.

Mary came up and said, Do we really need another week away from the ghosts?

I thought about it and said, It was nice of the captain to offer, but I feel the same way. They're addictive and solving their cases has become a goal for us.

So, are we going back to the office? Wes said from behind us.

I looked back and said, I guess so. How is Mary's dad doing with his new position?

You mean as a house haunting ghost now? He's enjoying it. I've given him some tips on how to handle people around him.

You mean mess with their heads, right?

Some of that too, he said with a grin.

Everyone was filtering out and saying their good-byes. Mary's Aunt Lou came up with a handful of envelopes.

I collected all the gifts from the people. There are a couple boxes on the buffet table. Probably kitchen appliances, she said.

Thanks, Lou, I said as I took the envelopes from her. The mayor had left first and he was followed by the rest of the police. The relatives hung in a little longer, then left.

I looked around and saw Emily sitting with Norm. It was sweet that he could stay with her, even if he was a ghost now.

Shortly the hall was empty except for Mary, her mother with ghost Dad, Wes and Aunt Lou.

I think we're going to leave too, I said to them. Thank you for your help to make this a special day. I took Mary's hand and led her out.

In the car, she asked, Where are we going?

To a motel with a king size bed, I said laughing, thinking about the twin bed we had to endure for the last four days. I told Wes to leave us alone, so we can relax.

We got a room and didn't come out until the next morning.

We went back to the house and gathered our bags, loading them in the car. We said good-bye to Mary's mom and ghost Dad. Aunt Lou decided not to move in with Emily, she felt the house was haunted. Which it was now.

We drove back to Detroit and arrived at our apartment. We took our bags in and stood, looking around.

It hasn't changed since we were gone, I said.

Did you expect it to be? Mary asked.

I hoped it would be a little cleaner, I replied.

Now you know what you have to do, Mary said with a grin, and went back out. I followed her to the car and we drove back to the precinct.

The office hadn't changed either. We sat at our desks and I said to Wes, Go see who wants to get out of the file room the most.

Wes left us and we waited. About two minutes later he reappeared and said, I got a great case to solve. The original detectives gave up and I know we can solve it. It's a guy and you'll never guess what he does. Go ahead and guess.

Wes, I'm not in any mood for guessing games, just tell us.

Aw, I never have any fun, he's a writer, but guess what kind of writer?

Ghost writer, I said with a grin.

Wes just stood staring at me. Yes, he's a ghost writer.

You left yourself open for that, Wes. Is he here?

In the chair, he said, sounding disappointed.

It was a good set up, Wes, I just happened to think of it when you were so excited.

I looked to the chair and said, So Wes, what's his name and his story?

Wes talked to the man and then said, Elmer Banks is his name. He was a ghost writer for a few well-known authors. They didn't write the books, he did, but they got famous and he got a small amount of pay compared to the wealth that the authors received for his books.

"Isn't that the agreement between an author and a ghost writer? The books become property
