      Chapter One - Lost

      He felt himself caught in a whirlwind and spun around, in a helpless state of panic. His heart was beating fast and his thoughts were confused and fearful. He tried hopelessly to grasp on to something solid and concrete, but his hands kept slipping away futilely. He finally let go and allowed himself to fall towards the hard ground hundreds of feet below and he braced himself, for the inevitable crash!

      Jack woke up with a start and his small kelpie dog, Max immediately left his comfortable dog bed and came to his side and licked his hand in welcome. Jack ruffled his brown and white coat and Max whimpered in delight.

      We make a good pair, don’t we Max, old boy! laughed Jack, still dazed from the odd dream he had just exited from. He shook his dark head and his green eyes flashed. Both bachelors and not a woman or mate for you, in sight!

      Max laughed in agreement and wagged his tail. Whatever Jack said was right with him! They lived in the small apartment together and had a well-ordered, if rather lonely life together.

      Jack was a pilot and flew for a small, but elite private jet-hire company out of Croydon, England. Max often accompanied him in the cockpit sitting at his feet dozing, while Jack flew wealthy passengers all over the United Kingdom and occasionally to the Continent.

      Max loved the flights and the company of Jack’s flight crew for they all spoilt him with numerous doggy treats and welcome strokes and pats. Even the less uptight passengers sometimes played with Max and complimented Jack on his dog’s trim appearance and friendly manner. All in all, they were a good twosome!

      Jack quickly shaved and showered and in his underwear began to make a hot breakfast for them both. It was bacon and eggs for him and hot mince and cereal for Max.

      We’re off to Inverness, today Max. Jack explained to him with a mouthful of crispy bacon. You’ll enjoy the flight, only an hour or so! Max nodded gravely and licked the last scrap of mince from his furry chin.

      Jack then dressed in his navy suit with its gold buttons and a pale shirt with its gold and blue epaulets. He wiped his shoes clean and placed his captain’s hat on his dark hair. He looked in his full-length mirror and appeared satisfied with what he saw. At six foot, he was still muscular and fit despite sitting at his flight chair for so many hours per day. His face was tanned and handsome and his green eyes glowed in his friendly features.

      But despite his relaxed and friendly demeanour, he had not had a serious girlfriend in several years, since a certain red-haired dynamo, called Claire had rushed into his life, captured his heart and then broken it, when she left with one of his close friends! He could laugh about it now, but it had severely put him off women, for the last few years!

      Maybe its time, I stopped living like a monk and began to date again, Max? he mused aloud. I kind of miss a female presence around the place!

      Max laughed his doggy grin and Jack leant down and ruffled his coat. But we’ll get by for a while, hey Max? You ready to go?

      Soon, they were out of their apartment and heading for the airport, in Jack’s small, red sports car. Max’s ears flapped in the cool breeze and
