Legends of Rock & Roll: The Jackson Five

About this ebook
The Jackson family started out in a humble four room home in Gary, Indiana. But, due to the persistence and drive of their father, a group of singers known as the Jackson Five became the leading performers in this country.
The five brothers were Jermaine, Jackie, Tito, Marlon and, of course, Michael. After being signed by Motown Records, they became their biggest act, shadowing The Supremes and even Stevie Wonder. All of their first four singles went to number one, a feat that had never been done before.
This book chronicles the beginnings and the rise and eventual decline of the Jackson Five as a group. Michael is covered in his younger years when he was a part of the group. After Michael left the Jacksons, he went on to become "the King of Pop" and the greatest performer in the world during the Eighties. That adventure is chronicled in a separate book, "Legends of Rock & Roll - Michael Jackson (The Solo Years)".
All the Legends of Rock & Roll books are essentially biographies, but I am interested primarily in the music. You'll find that the emphasis is on the music, how it came to be, who wrote it and performed it and any juicy tidbits about any given song or album.
James Hoag
James Hoag has always been a big fan of Rock & Roll. Most people graduate from high school and then proceed to "grow up" and go on to more adult types of music. James got stuck at about age 18 and has been an avid fan of popular music ever since. His favorite music is from the Fifties, the origin of Rock & Roll and which was the era in which James grew up. But he likes almost all types of popular music including country music. After working his entire life as a computer programmer, he is now retired and he decided to share his love of the music and of the performers by writing books that discuss the life and music of the various people who have meant so much to him over the years. He calls each book a "love letter" to the stars that have enriched our lives so much. These people are truly Legends.

About the Author
Introduction
Throughout the history of American music, there have been many musical families that have entertained us. The Osmonds come to mind as well as The Beach Boys and the Allman Brothers Band. But, certainly, one of the biggest families in the music business, if not the biggest, is the Jackson Family.
They started out as The Jackson Brothers, then changed to the Jackson Five (or just the Jackson 5, sometimes written as the Jackson 5ive.), and then became just the Jacksons. Each of the members is almost as famous as the group as a whole. But, of course, one member went on to eclipse everyone. He became bigger than any of his siblings and really bigger than anyone else in the music business. That, of course, was Michael Jackson.
But Michael Jackson is important enough to get his own book which covers his solo years after he left the group. In this book, I’d like to concentrate on the brothers: the Jacksons.
I had only been married a couple of years and had one tiny baby when the Jackson brothers came on the scene. If you were alive in 1970, you can’t help but remember the beginning of what would become a dynasty. We all assumed the Jacksons came out of Detroit, but they didn’t. The beginning of the story is in a small Indiana town in the early Sixties. A spark would be ignited that would grow into a blaze that would consume the entire world. And it was, in large part, the work of one man.
In the Beginning
Most of the Legends of Rock & Roll books start out with the birth of the performer and a brief mention of his or her parents and maybe a mention that the father or mother came from musical roots and then I don’t talk much more about the parents. In the case of the Jacksons, their father had a very significant role in their becoming the stars that they became.
Joseph Walter Joe
Jackson married Katherine Scruse on November 4, 1949. They moved into a small two-bedroom home in Gary, Indiana. Joe was a tough guy, a former boxer, and he operated a crane for a steel mill in Gary to support the family. Katherine also worked in a department store. Times were hard and money was tight and as the kids came, it got even tighter.
On May 29, 1950, their first of nine children, Maureen Reillette Rebbie,
was born. Sigmund Esco Jackie
was next born on May 4, 1951. Then there was Toriano Adaryll Tito
born on October 15, 1953. Number four was Jermaine La Jaune born on December 11, 1954. Next, La Toya Yvonne was born on May 29, 1956. Number six was Marlon David born on March 12, 1957. Not many people know that Marlon had a twin brother named Brandon who died at birth.
Michael Joseph was born on August 29, 1958. He was the seventh child born to Joe and Katherine. After Michael, Steven Randall Randy
was born on October 29, 1961. He was the last boy. One more girl, Janet
