About this ebook

Laurie's entire life had been spent in the tower, subject to her magic and her whims. Then chance gave her the opportunity to escape and Laurie seized it with everything she had.

The world outside was wild, dangerous and fraught with other spells as dangerous as anything in the tower.

It was beautiful.

Come what may, Laurie wouldn't give up. This was her life now and nothing was taking it away.

    1. Spider

    Laurie Rene Barros!

The shout echoed off the brick wall surrounding the garden. Laurie ducked. Out here, amidst the lilacs and cedar that grew along the wall, she should be safe. Manu rarely came out here. He claimed that there were too many mosquitoes and snakes, not that Laurie had ever seen a single snake that wasn't stuffed. The mosquitoes were tiny and harmless, too, just little bits of legs and wings that whined around her ears as she furtively dug at the base of the wall.

Not that her digging was making the slightest bit of difference. The brick wall was fifteen feet high, maybe sixteen and at least that many feet wide. When she'd snuck away from her duties in the kitchen and clambered up onto the roof of the house, Laurie had just been able to see the top of the wall. It looked like it stretched at least five or six feet wide, maybe more. Possibly a lot more given that she'd only gotten one quick glimpse before Manu started screaming at her to get down from there before she broke her neck.

She wouldn't break her neck. The fall wasn't that far. And since she'd hit her last growth spurt she was almost six feet tall so the roof was only twice as far from the ground as she stood. Nothing to it.

Didn't really matter to Manu, though. He thought rules were rules and if the rules said you didn't see outside the wall and you never climbed onto the roof and you certainly never tried to dig a hole underneath the wall so that you could get out, well then, you didn't do it. Any of it.

Looked to her like the rule not to go under the wall was because the bricks went down and down and down into the loamy earth with no stopping. She'd managed to dig a hole almost four feet deep during stolen moments over the last couple of weeks. The earth was mounded under a dozen different shrubs, all too small to support Laurie's weight. Despite that and the effort she'd put into digging, she hadn't found the bottom of the wall yet. It might go on forever, from all she could tell, so deep underground that it came
